Overview

EN 12881-2:2005+A1:2008 is a CEN European standard that specifies a large-scale fire test method to assess fire propagation along conveyor belts. Part 2 of the EN 12881 series simulates a fire resulting from surrounding materials igniting (not a local burner), giving an indication of how a conveyor belt reacts in a developing large fire. The method is intended for flammability testing, fire-safety assessment and regulatory conformity related to conveyor belting.

  • Thermocouples Type K per EN 60584‑1, mounted longitudinally about 3 m apart and 100 mm below the roof.
  • Airflow adjusted to 1.2 m/s measured with an anemometer placed 10 m upstream of the test piece.
  • Ambient temperature before the test: 5 °C to 30 °C.
  • Continuous recording of temperature, gas composition and air speed.
• Procedure and safety: Detailed positioning and ignition steps; strong safety warning-tests generate large smoke/heat and should not be supervised by one person.
• Reporting: Test report must reference EN 12881-2:2005+A1:2008 and include belt description, distance of fire propagation, deviations, date, and a disclaimer that results apply only to tested samples.
