Overview
SIST EN ISO 10318-1:2015/A1:2018 is an important amendment to the international standard focused on geosynthetics, specifically addressing the terms and definitions used within this technical field. Developed by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 221 in collaboration with CEN Technical Committee CEN/TC 189, this amendment updates and refines the vocabulary related to geosynthetic products and applications to ensure consistency and clarity at the international and European levels.
This standard is crucial for professionals involved in the design, manufacturing, and application of geosynthetic materials-a group of polymeric products commonly used in civil engineering, environmental containment, and geotechnical applications. The amendment was approved by CEN in June 2018 and has been adopted by national standards bodies across the European Union and affiliated countries.
Key Terms and Updates
This amendment introduces critical clarifications and additions that enhance the understanding of geosynthetics terminology. Notable updates include:
Stabilization: Defined as the improvement of the mechanical behavior of an unbound granular material through the inclusion of one or more geosynthetic layers. This process reduces deformation and minimizes movements under applied loads, which is essential for infrastructure reliability and longevity.
Geoblanket (GBL): A permeable structure consisting of loose natural or synthetic fibers combined with geosynthetic elements bonded to form a continuous sheet. Geoblankets are utilized for filtration, separation, or protection functions within geotechnical systems.
These refined definitions facilitate precise communication among engineers, manufacturers, regulators, and other stakeholders, enabling consistent specification, quality assurance, and application of geosynthetic products.
Practical Applications
SIST EN ISO 10318-1:2015/A1:2018 supports a broad range of applications where geosynthetics play a vital role, including:
- Road and pavement engineering: Employing geosynthetic stabilization to enhance load-bearing capacity and reduce pavement deformation.
- Slope and embankment reinforcement: Using geosynthetic layers to stabilize soils and improve structural integrity.
- Drainage and filtration systems: Applying geoblankets and similar products to maintain soil structure while allowing fluid passage.
- Environmental protection: Incorporating geosynthetics in landfill liners and containment systems to prevent contamination.
- Erosion control: Deploying geosynthetic materials in soil stabilization and water management.
The amendment enables these applications to benefit from a standardized terminology framework that supports design accuracy, material selection, and regulatory compliance.
Related Standards
This amendment complements the original EN ISO 10318-1:2015 standard and is part of the broader ISO 10318 series dedicated to geosynthetics, which covers:
- Methods for testing and evaluation of geosynthetic materials.
- Specifications for different types of geosynthetics such as geotextiles, geomembranes, geogrids, and geonets.
- Guidelines for installation, durability, and performance assessment.
Moreover, SIST EN ISO 10318-1:2015/A1:2018 aligns with CEN/CENELEC internal regulations mandating uniform adoption of amendments across European nations and harmonization with international standards to streamline global trade and technical cooperation.
