Testing sprayed concrete - Part 7: Fibre content of fibre reinforced concrete

This part of European Standard specifies a method for the determination of the fibre content of sprayed concrete from either a fresh or hardened (i.e. before or after set) concrete sample. Only the method using a fresh sample is appropriate with polymer fibres, while both types are applicable with steel fibres.

Overview

SIST EN 14488-7:2006 - Testing Sprayed Concrete: Fibre Content of Fibre Reinforced Concrete is a European standard specifying methods for determining the fibre content in sprayed concrete, often known as shotcrete. The standard covers procedures to evaluate fibre content in both fresh and hardened concrete samples, supporting quality control, compliance, and structural performance requirements, especially when using steel or polymer fibres.

The methods ensure that the right amount and distribution of reinforcement fibres are present, which is essential for optimizing the mechanical behavior and durability of sprayed concrete in demanding construction environments.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Application:

    • Specifies how to determine the fibre content in sprayed concrete, using fresh or hardened samples.
    • For polymer fibres, only fresh sample methods are applicable; for steel fibres, both fresh and hardened sample methods are suitable.
  • Test Methods:

    • Hardened Sample (Method A):
      • Requires core samples from the concrete structure or panel.
      • Fibre extraction involves crushing the core and mechanical separation.
    • Fresh Sample (Method B):
      • Samples are cut from the fresh layer or test panel using a trowel or similar tool.
      • Fibres are washed out, separated, dried, and weighed.
  • Measurement and Reporting:

    • Calculation of fibre content is based on extracted fibre mass and the sample volume.
    • Includes detailed requirements for expressing results, sample identification, fibre type, method used, and any deviations from the standard.

Applications

  • Quality Control in Shotcrete Construction:

    • Ensures fibre-reinforced concrete meets specified design and performance criteria.
    • Critical for applications in tunnels, mines, slope stabilization, and industrial structures where fibre distribution affects mechanical properties and durability.
  • Compliance Testing:

    • Provides contractors and quality assurance labs a reliable standard to verify the actual fibre content aligns with specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Material Development and Research:

    • Useful for testing new fibre-reinforced concrete mixes, optimizing fibre types, and evaluating the impact of fibre content on structural behavior.
  • Safety and Longevity:

    • Accurate determination of fibre content contributes to the structural safety, crack control, and long-term performance of sprayed concrete installations.

Related Standards

  • EN 14488-1: Testing sprayed concrete - Part 1: Sampling fresh and hardened concrete.
  • EN 12350-6: Testing fresh concrete - Part 6: Density.
  • EN 12390-7: Testing hardened concrete - Part 7: Density of hardened concrete.
  • EN 12504-1: Testing concrete in structures - Part 1: Cored specimens - Testing, examining, and compressive strength.

These related standards provide additional test procedures and requirements for sampling, density measurement, and testing methodology in concrete and concrete products.

Practical Value

Complying with SIST EN 14488-7:2006 helps ensure fibre reinforced sprayed concrete is produced, tested, and certified according to proven and widely recognized methods. Concrete producers, testing laboratories, and contractors benefit through improved consistency, transparency, and confidence in construction material performance. This leads to safer, longer-lasting structures and contributes to meeting international best practices in sprayed concrete technology.
