Testing sprayed concrete - Part 7: Fibre content of fibre reinforced concrete
This part of European Standard specifies a method for the determination of the fibre content of sprayed concrete from either a fresh or hardened (i.e. before or after set) concrete sample. Only the method using a fresh sample is appropriate with polymer fibres, while both types are applicable with steel fibres.

Overview
EN 14488-7:2006 (CEN) specifies a test method to determine the fibre content of fibre-reinforced sprayed concrete using either fresh or hardened samples. The standard clarifies sampling options, extraction procedures and result expression to support reliable quality control and compliance assessment on sprayed concrete works. Note: Method B (fresh sample) is the only appropriate route for polymer fibres; both Method A (hardened) and Method B apply to steel fibres.
Key Topics
Scope and purpose: Determine fibre content from a representative sprayed concrete coupon or core by extracting fibres and relating their mass to the specimen volume.
Test methods:
- Method A - Hardened sample: Cut three cores (diameter 50–100 mm; length 75–150 mm unless layer is thinner), determine specimen volume (by dimension calculation or water displacement), crush the core, extract and clean fibres, then weigh.
- Method B - Fresh sample: Cut three coupons (1–2 kg each) from the full depth of the sprayed layer before final set, determine volume by weighing-in-water, wash out matrix material to recover fibres (alcohol soak may be used for synthetic fibres), dry and weigh.
Apparatus and environment: Typical equipment includes an accurate balance, immersion tank for displacement at 20 ± 2 °C, non-absorbent cutting trowel and sieving/wash equipment for fibre separation.
Mass and volume measurement: Mass of fibres is measured to 0.1 g for steel and 0.01 g for polymer fibres as appropriate. Sample volume is determined by weighing-in-water (reference) or dimensional calculation following EN 12350-6 and EN 12390-7.
Result calculation: Fibre content (kg/m3) is obtained by converting extracted fibre mass into kilograms and dividing by specimen volume in m3. In practice: Cf (kg/m3) = (mf (g) ÷ 1000) ÷ Vd (m3).
Reporting: Test reports should identify specimen and fibre type, specify method (A or B), list masses and calculated fibre contents for each specimen, give the mean and standard deviation, and note any deviations from the standard.
Applications
- Quality control and acceptance testing of sprayed concrete in tunnels, shotcrete repair, and civil engineering structures.
- Verification of supplied fibre dosage and homogeneity through depth to confirm design and performance assumptions for toughness, residual strength and crack control.
- Selection of sampling method depending on fibre type: use fresh-sample extraction for polymer fibres and either method for steel fibres.
