Abstract

In addition to the common requirements given in EN 15182-1, this document specifies the specific safety and performance requirements and the corresponding test methods, applicale to hand-held branchpipes with smooth bore and/or one fixed spray jet angle with a nominal pressure of 16 bar (1,6 MPa) PN 16, with a maximum flow rate up to 1 000 l/min at a reference pressure of 6 bar (0,6 MPa).
NOTE 1   These branchpipes offer no or inadequate protection for firefighters when the spray jet angle is less than 30 ° and therefore are not adapted in high risk firefighting situations such as internal attack.
NOTE 2   These branchpipes are not adapted when fighting fires in or near electrical installations when the spray jet angle is less than 30° without written authorization in the manual (safety distances included).

oSIST prEN 15182-3:2026 is a SIST publication of the draft European Standard prEN 15182-3:2026 for fire service hand-held branchpipes. It specifies the additional safety and performance requirements, together with test methods, for smooth bore and/or one fixed spray jet angle branchpipes PN 16. The document is for manufacturers, test laboratories, and users who need to specify or verify these branchpipes for firefighting support operations.

What does oSIST prEN 15182-3:2026 specify?

oSIST prEN 15182-3:2026 covers hand-held branchpipes for fire service use with smooth bore and/or one fixed spray jet angle, building on the common requirements in EN 15182-1:2026. It applies to PN 16 branchpipes with a maximum flow rate up to 1 000 l/min at a reference pressure of 6 bar.

The scope also gives two practical safety notes. Branchpipes with a spray jet angle below 30° offer no or inadequate firefighter protection in high-risk situations such as internal attack, and they are not suited to fires in or near electrical installations below that angle unless the manual gives written authorization and safety distances.

The document is organized into:

  • Clause 1 - Scope
  • Clause 2 - Normative references
  • Clause 3 - Terms and definitions
  • Clause 4 - Requirements and verification, with sections on general requirements, mechanical characteristics, hydraulic characteristics, leak-tightness, and hydrostatic behaviour

What are the key requirements of oSIST prEN 15182-3:2026?

oSIST prEN 15182-3:2026 requires branchpipes to meet EN 15182-1:2026 and uses the classification from Annex A of EN 15182-1:2026. It also states that all tests in this part are type tests, so the document is aimed at product validation rather than routine field checks.

General and safety-related requirements

Clause 4.1 says PN 16 branchpipes shall not be used above 16 bar. That matters because the pressure rating defines the safe operating limit for the equipment and for the user instructions.

Clause 4.2.3 requires jet positions, where applicable, to be clearly marked, and any spray jet on the branchpipe shall have a minimum angle of 15°. In practice, this means the operator must be able to identify the settings quickly and the product must provide the specified spray capability.

Mechanical characteristics

Clause 4.2.1 limits dimensions and mass according to the branchpipe flow-rate class. Clause 4.2.2 limits the torques needed to move operating parts such as levers, valve handles and rotating elements, and it also sets a tactile force range for rotating elements with detents.

Clause 4.2.2 also requires the closed position on valve-handled branchpipes to be in the direction of flow, or otherwise clearly identified. For users, this reduces the risk of incorrect operation under pressure.

Hydraulic characteristics

Clause 4.3.1 sets the pressure conditions used to determine hydraulic performance and gives the order of the tests. Clause 4.3.2 controls the declared flow rates at straight jet and/or spray jet, with deviation limits tied to the flow setting.

Clause 4.3.3 requires effective throw to be demonstrated for each flow-rate position above 50 l/min at straight jet, under defined test conditions. The instruction handbook has to state the maximum throw, so the user can judge reach in real firefighting conditions.

Tightness and pressure resistance

Clause 4.4 requires no leakage during normal operation, including a closed-state leak test and an open-state leak test. Clause 4.5 requires the branchpipe to withstand hydrostatic loading up to the burst-pressure test level without rupture, which addresses water-hammer resistance and structural safety.

What terms does oSIST prEN 15182-3:2026 define?

  • smooth bore - A device that provides a solid water stream.
  • test pressure (p_t) - The static pressure used for leakage tests.
  • PN 16 - The nominal pressure rating used for this branchpipe family.
  • reference pressure - The pressure used for the flow-rate and throw measurements.
  • burst pressure (p_B) - The pressure level used in the hydrostatic behaviour test.
  • effective throw (d_eff) - The throw distance measured under the specified test conditions.
  • flow rate (Q) - The amount of water delivered by the branchpipe, used to classify and verify performance.

Who uses oSIST prEN 15182-3:2026?

oSIST prEN 15182-3:2026 is used by manufacturers of fire service branchpipes, testing laboratories, and technical reviewers who verify design and performance. It is also useful for fire and rescue services, buyers, and quality managers who need to specify the right branchpipe type and check that the product matches its intended use.

The document is especially relevant when selecting equipment for firefighting support operations where the jet form, flow rate, handling effort, and pressure rating all affect usability and safety.

What changed in oSIST prEN 15182-3:2026 from the previous edition?

oSIST prEN 15182-3:2026 will supersede EN 15182-3:2019. The foreword lists these significant changes:

  • the first part of the title was changed
  • the wording “smooth bore jet” and “smooth bore branchpipe” was replaced by “smooth bore”
  • the scope wording was updated
  • definition 3.2, test pressure, was added
  • clause 4.1 was updated
  • editorial improvements were made

Which standards are used with oSIST prEN 15182-3:2026?

oSIST prEN 15182-3:2026 cites EN 15182-1:2026 as its normative reference. EN 15182-1:2026 provides the common requirements for hand-held branchpipes and the classification used in Annex A, so this part is read together with that general part.

What does the oSIST prEN 15182-3:2026 document contain?

The document contains the technical framework for testing and verifying PN 16 hand-held branchpipes with smooth bore and/or one fixed spray jet angle. It includes a table for dimensions and mass, a table for operating-element torques, and a table for permitted flow-rate deviation.

It also includes figures and methods for effective-throw measurement, plus procedures for leak-tightness and hydrostatic behaviour. These contents are used in design verification, type testing, and product assessment before the branchpipe is placed on the market or specified for fire service use.
