Dentistry - Number coding system for rotary instruments - Part 7: Specific characteristics of mandrels and special instruments (ISO 6360-7:2006)
ISO 6360-7:2006 specifies the code numbers for specific characteristics of mandrels and special instruments such as bone cutters, implant burs, trephines, wax scrapers and polishers. This three-digit number forms the fourth group of three digits in the 15-digit overall number, the principles of which are explained in ISO 6360-1 and ISO 6360-2.

Overview
SIST EN ISO 6360-7:2006 is an international standard that defines the number coding system for the specific characteristics of mandrels and special rotary instruments used in dentistry. Developed by CEN and ISO, this standard forms a part of the comprehensive ISO 6360 series, ensuring a unified and systematic approach to the identification and classification of dental rotary instruments. SIST EN ISO 6360-7:2006 specifies the three-digit code numbers representing the unique features of instruments such as bone cutters, implant burs, trephines, wax scrapers, and polishers. These codes are incorporated as the fourth group in the overall 15-digit number, which facilitates accurate identification and documentation of dental devices.
Key Topics
- Number Coding System: Defines a universal 15-digit coding framework for dental rotary instruments.
- Specific Characteristics: Focuses on the distinguishing features of mandrels and special instruments, captured in a dedicated three-digit segment within the code.
- Instrument Types Covered:
- Mandrels
- Bone cutters
- Implant burs (including pilot and spiral burs)
- Trephines
- Wax scrapers and cutters
- Metallic polishers
- Format Consistency: Ensures alignment with the general principles and structure outlined in ISO 6360-1 (general characteristics) and ISO 6360-2 (shapes).
- Code Interpretation:
- For most mandrels and wax scrapers, the digits 10-12 in the code are "000".
- For bone cutters, implant burs, trephines, the code reflects the length of the working part (in 0.1 mm).
- For metallic polishers, the code reflects the surface structure (e.g., with or without grooves).
Applications
SIST EN ISO 6360-7:2006 holds practical value across the dental industry by providing:
- Universal Classification: Enables manufacturers, suppliers, and dental professionals to use a unified number coding system for rotary instruments, improving traceability and communication.
- Catalog Integration: Supports dental instrument suppliers and manufacturers in cataloguing products with standardized codes for ease of reference and purchasing.
- Inventory Management: Facilitates streamlined inventory processes in dental clinics, laboratories, and hospitals through accurate identification and differentiation of similar instruments.
- Regulatory Compliance: Assists organizations in meeting international regulatory and quality requirements by adhering to recognized classification standards.
- Procurement and Logistics: Simplifies ordering processes and reduces errors by ensuring each instrument can be unmistakably identified based on its coded characteristics.
Related Standards
SIST EN ISO 6360-7:2006 is part of a broader set of standards that together form the ISO 6360 series, covering all aspects of dental rotary instrument coding:
- ISO 6360-1: General characteristics of rotary instrument coding
- ISO 6360-2: Shapes of rotary instruments
- ISO 6360-3: Specific characteristics of burs and cutters
- ISO 6360-4: Specific characteristics of diamond instruments
- ISO 6360-6: Specific characteristics of abrasive instruments
Together, these standards reinforce consistency, interoperability, and quality across dental practices and manufacturers worldwide, ensuring a cohesive framework for the classification and identification of dental rotary instruments.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 6360-7 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 106, Dentistry, Subcommittee SC 4, Dental
instruments.
ISO 6360 consists of the following parts, under the general title Dentistry — Number coding system for rotary
instruments:
