Overview
SIST EN 24178:1998, based on ISO 4178:1980, is an important European standard developed by CEN that specifies the required information to be recorded during distribution trials involving complete, filled transport packages. This standard applies to distribution systems where packages may encounter hazards such as stacking, vertical impacts, horizontal impacts, and vibration during transportation.
The primary purpose of SIST EN 24178:1998 is to facilitate accurate and consistent documentation of test trials, enabling the evaluation and comparison of packaging performance across different distribution environments. By standardizing the recording of test data, this document supports efforts to optimize packaging design and handling processes to minimize damage during transport.
Keywords: transport packages, distribution trials, packaging hazards, stacking impact, vibration, shipping tests, transport packaging standards.
Key Topics
Trial Description
Detailed records must include:- Purpose of the trial
- Description of the packages tested
- Start and end points of transport
- Sequence and timing of handling operations
- Transport modes used during distribution
Trial Results
Information on the outcome should cover:- Quality reduction of the package or contents
- Extent of damage or loss of contents
- Quantitative measurements to connect damage with specific hazards
Package Details
Precise documentation of:- Package mass and dimensions
- Packaging materials and sealing methods
- Product contents and labeling
- Handling aids attached
Hazards Recorded
Distribution hazards must be carefully logged for each trial stage, including:- Stacking: number of packages stacked, stacking height, stack density, package orientation, and loading surfaces
- Vertical Impact: number of drops, drop heights, impact surfaces, and package orientation
- Horizontal Impact: frequency and velocity of impacts, number of impacts, and package attitude
- Vibration: vibration frequency, amplitude, duration, and any superimposed load
General Information
Additional details such as organizations involved, individuals participating, and other relevant contextual data must be recorded to support full traceability of trial results.
Applications
SIST EN 24178:1998 is essential for organizations involved in the design, testing, and quality assurance of transport packaging. Typical applications include:
Packaging Design Validation
Helps manufacturers confirm that packaging solutions can withstand typical distribution hazards, reducing damage and returns.Distribution System Analysis
Enables logistics providers to assess and improve handling procedures and transportation modes to minimize package damage.Quality Control and Compliance
Supports compliance with industry regulations and customer requirements for packaging robustness.Research and Development
Aids in the development of new packaging materials and test methods by providing systematic data collection protocols.

Foreword ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national Standards institutes (ISO member bedies). The work of developing Inter- national Standards is carried out through ISO technical committees. Every member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been set up has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by the ISO Council. INTERNATIONALSTANDARD ISO 4178-1980 (EI Complete, filled transport packages - Distribution trials - Information to be recorded 0 Introduction The relationship between the hazards encountered by complete, filled transport packages in a distribution System and the resulting darnage that may be sustained by the packages and/or their contents is important in the development of new test methods, in refining existing test methods, and in the preparation of appropriate test schedules. The study of such relationships is facilitated if, when carrying out distribution trials involving complete, filled transport packages, adequate information is recorded and if such information is recorded on a uniform basis. This enables proper comparisons to be made of data obtained at different times and under various circumstances. The purpose of this International Standard is to aid such comparisons by specifying the information to be recorded. Its contents are likely to be of interest to all concerned with distribution trials involving complete, filled transport packages. 1 Scope and field of application This International Standard specifies the information to be recorded when carrying out distribution trials involving complete, filled transport packages. lt is applicable to distribution Systems in which the hazards of stacking, vertical impact, horizontal impact, and Vibration are encountered or are likely to be encountered. 2 Information to be recorded The following information shall be recorded in the Order given. Where possible, results shall be set out in the form of a table. 2.1 Description of trial A brief description of the trial shall be given, including : a) the purpose of the trial; b) a brief description of the package(s) used; c) the starting Point and destination of the package(s), if a journey was involved; d) a description of the operations carried out on the package(s), and the Order in which they were carried out; e) the time intervals between the various operations carried out on the package(s); f) the duration of each of the various
