Overview

EN 61534-21:2014/A11:2021 (CLC) is a CENELEC amendment that updates Part 21 of the EN 61534 series for powertrack systems intended for wall and ceiling mounting. Prepared by CLC/TC 213 “Cable management systems” and approved in 2020, this amendment adds normative and informative content (notably Annex H, ZA, and ZZ) and a safety note on electromagnetic interference (EMI) devices. The document supports conformity with the EU Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU) when cited in the Official Journal.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and applicability - Particular requirements for wall- and ceiling-mounted powertrack systems (mounting, construction, testing and documentation).
  • EMI installation notice - A new Note advises special attention to installation rules where elements include EMI suppression devices.
  • Routine tests (Annex H, normative) - Minimum factory tests to be performed on every new assembly:
    • Visual inspection of assembly and wiring
    • Operation tests of electrical devices (where applicable)
    • Dielectric test (power-frequency withstand voltage per Table 7) for at least 1 s
    • Continuity tests of live conductors and correct phasing
    • Continuity tests of protective circuits
  • Normative references (Annex ZA) - Adds references to related international standards, including IEC 61534-1:2011/A2:2020 (EN 61534-1:2011/A2:2021).
  • Regulatory mapping (Annex ZZ) - Documents the relationship between this standard’s clauses and the safety objectives of the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU, indicating how compliance can confer a presumption of conformity within the standard’s scope.

Practical applications

  • Design and manufacture of fixed and modular powertrack/busway systems for suspended ceilings, walls and architectural mounts.
  • Factory acceptance testing and routine quality control for assembled powertracks.
  • Technical requirements for product documentation, marking, and safe installation guidance used by specifiers and contractors.
  • Demonstrating compliance to regulators and assessing conformity with the LVD when the standard is cited in the Official Journal.

Who uses this standard

  • Powertrack and busway manufacturers and product engineers
  • Test laboratories and quality assurance teams performing routine and type tests
  • Electrical installers, system integrators and building services engineers
  • Compliance officers and notified bodies assessing conformity with the Low Voltage Directive

Related standards

  • IEC/EN 61534-1 (Powertrack systems - Part 1: General requirements) - referenced via Annex ZA
  • Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU - regulatory framework linked via Annex ZZ
