General Information
Overview
SIST EN ISO 1833-28:2020 specifies a standardized method for the quantitative chemical analysis of textiles containing mixtures of chitosan fibre with other fibres. Using diluted acetic acid, this method accurately determines the mass percentage of chitosan fibres in blended textile materials. This standard supports quality control and material verification in textile manufacturing involving bio-based chitosan fibres alongside cellulose, protein, and synthetic fibres.
The standard embraces a broad range of fibre combinations, including chitosan blended with:
- Cellulose fibres: cotton, linen, ramie, viscose, modal, lyocell
- Protein fibres: wool, cashmere, silk
- Synthetic fibres: polyester, polyamide, acrylic
This method ensures precise measurement by dissolving chitosan in diluted acetic acid, filtering residues, washing, drying, and weighing the leftover fibres to calculate the chitosan content.
Key Topics
- Purpose: Quantitative determination of chitosan fibre mass percentage in textiles after removing non-fibrous matter.
- Method principle: Chitosan fibre dissolves in diluted acetic acid; remaining fibres are isolated, dried, and weighed to calculate chitosan share.
- Chemical reagents: Diluted acetic acid (20 ml acetic acid per litre water) and diluted ammonia solution (80 ml ammonia per litre water).
- Apparatus requirements: Conical flask, mechanical shaker with water bath (90–95 °C), filter crucibles, and standard laboratory utensils.
- Test procedure:
- Specimen treatment with diluted acetic acid under controlled temperature and agitation
- Filtration and washing with ammonia and water to remove soluble components
- Drying and weighing residual fibre mix for calculation
- Precision: Confidence limits within ±1 percentage point at 95% confidence level, based on interlaboratory trials.
- Statistical validation: Data from multiple labs confirm repeatability and reproducibility across different fibre blends.
Applications
SIST EN ISO 1833-28:2020 is critical for:
- Textile quality control: Ensuring precise quantification of chitosan fibre in blended fabrics supports manufacturing consistency and compliance.
- Fibres and material certification: Verifying the chitosan content in textiles for labeling, performance claims, or regulatory requirements.
- Research and development: Facilitating innovation in bio-based blended textiles by providing a reliable testing framework.
- Sustainability assessments: Assisting in verifying natural fibre content contributing to environmentally friendly textiles.
- Industry compliance: Helping manufacturers comply with international standards in textile fibre analysis and reporting.
