Overview
EN 61000-4-14:1999/A2:2009 (equivalent to IEC 61000-4-14:1999/A2:2009) is a CLC/CENELEC amendment specifying a standardized voltage fluctuation immunity test for electrical and electronic equipment with input current not exceeding 16 A per phase. It defines test sequences, timing, and generator characteristics used in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing to evaluate equipment immunity to short-term voltage changes (dips, swells and steps).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Voltage fluctuation immunity test applicable to equipment with input current ≤ 16 A per phase.
- Test sequences: Repetition period T = 5 s and fluctuation duration t = 2 s (Figure 1d). Changes use five successive voltage steps spread over five mains cycles.
- Step size and timing:
- Each voltage change is in five steps of magnitude ΔU/5.
- Each step occurs over π/2 radians (~5 ms at 50 Hz).
- Falling steps start at phase angle φ = 270° → 360°; rising steps start at φ = 180° → 270°.
- Open test level: An “x” level is left open for product standards to define situations beyond normal supply conditions; for public supply equipment values shall not be below class 2.
- Test generator characteristics (Table 2 highlights):
- Output voltage capability U ±15%
- Voltage accuracy ±1%
- Zero-crossing accuracy ≤ 250 µs
- Overshoot/undershoot < 5% of the applied change
- Voltage rise/fall time during switching < 1 ms
- Maximum interphase error (3‑phase) 2.5°
- Frequency accuracy ±2.5% of nominal (50/60 Hz)
- Output current capability sufficient for the EUT and capable of crest factor ≥ 3 during verification
- Verification:
- Generator verification with a resistive load equal to the generator’s current capability (example: 230 V / 16 A → 14.3 Ω).
- Example verification load circuit (Figure 4) uses a bridge rectifier, an 11 000 µF ±20% electrolytic capacitor, a 61 Ω ±1% resistor and a specified series resistance target (92 mΩ ±10%).
Applications and users
- Intended for EMC test laboratories, product manufacturers, design and compliance engineers, and standards committees to:
- Verify immunity of appliances, consumer electronics, industrial equipment and medical devices (where input ≤16 A) against mains voltage fluctuations.
- Develop product-specific test levels and ensure conformity with public supply immunity classes.
- Useful when validating power-supply robustness, firmware/software behavior under supply variation, and compliance evidence for regulatory or market access.
Related standards
- IEC/EN 61000-4-14 (base publication and amendment A2)
- IEC 61000-4-11 (noted as suitable for test generators with power amplifiers)
- Other IEC 61000 series EMC test methods and product-specific standards that may set required test levels
