Overview
SIST EN 1870-13:2008/kprA1:2009 is a Slovene standard that specifies safety requirements for woodworking machinery, focusing on circular sawing machines-specifically horizontal beam panel sawing machines. Developed under the umbrella of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), this document serves as a type 2 amendment to the previously established EN 1870-13:2007, incorporating updates mandated by the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
This amendment introduces updates to safety protocols, references to relevant international standards, and requirements related to the marking, instruction handbooks, and ergonomics for horizontal beam panel saws. It is intended to enhance the safe operation, handling, and maintenance of woodworking machines used in professional and industrial settings.
Key Topics
- Scope of Amendment
Updates relate to significant hazards, handling, marking, instructions, and compliance with essential safety requirements. - Ergonomics and Handling
New requirements are introduced to facilitate the safe handling of heavy machine components, ensuring attachments for lifting devices are included where necessary. - Machine Marking
Updated requirements specify that machines must be clearly marked with the manufacturer’s details, year of construction, and machine designation. - Instruction Handbook
Enhanced and clarified content required in operating manuals, including maintenance, precautions for injury prevention, operating procedures in case of an accident or breakdown, and specifications for safety-relevant spare parts. - Annex ZB Addition
Provides a detailed mapping between standard clauses and the essential requirements of the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, supporting legal compliance.
Applications
The SIST EN 1870-13:2008/kprA1:2009 standard is crucial for:
- Manufacturers of Woodworking Machinery
Ensures product design and documentation meet up-to-date European safety requirements and facilitates CE marking. - Industrial Users and Woodworking Facilities
Guides the procurement and safe use of horizontal beam panel sawing machines, supporting workplace safety management. - Maintenance and Safety Managers
Details comprehensive operating instructions, accident response protocols, and component specifications, reducing risks during maintenance and repair tasks. - Standardization and Regulatory Bodies
Harmonizes national safety regulations with European directives, ensuring consistent enforcement across member states.
Related Standards
The document references and aligns with several related standards for machine safety and performance, including:
- EN ISO 13857:2008 - Safety of machinery - Safety distances to prevent hazard zones being reached by upper and lower limbs.
- EN 60825-1:2007 - Safety of laser products - Equipment classification and requirements.
- EN 61310-1:2008 - Safety of machinery - Indication, marking, and actuation - Requirements for visual, acoustic, and tactile signals.
- EN ISO 13849-1:2008 & EN ISO 13849-2:2008 - Safety of machinery - Safety-related parts of control systems.
- EN ISO 13850:2008 - Safety of machinery - Emergency stop function.
Practical Value
Implementing the requirements of SIST EN 1870-13:2008/kprA1:2009 enhances machinery safety and user protection, supports regulatory compliance with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, and fosters a safer working environment in woodworking operations. Manufacturers, employers, and users benefit from standardized processes that reduce the risk of accidents, improve machine reliability, and streamline maintenance, ultimately bolstering productivity and legal conformity in the woodworking sector.
