Overview

EN 14540:2014 - Fire-fighting hoses - Non-percolating layflat hoses for fixed systems is a European Standard published by CEN that specifies requirements and test methods for non-percolating layflat hoses used in fixed hose systems (wall hydrants, cabinets). The standard covers hoses with inside diameters from 25 mm to 52 mm, intended for a maximum working pressure of 1.5 MPa and normal working pressure 1.0 MPa. It defines construction, performance, environmental limits and marking so that fire-fighting hoses used in buildings meet consistent safety and durability criteria.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & temperatures: Hoses are intended for ambient temperatures from −20 °C (standard) to +60 °C; a special test at −30 °C applies for colder climates.
  • Construction: Uncovered hoses with a water-impermeable rubber or plastics lining and a synthetic fibre woven jacket (layflat hose design).
  • Dimensions & mass: Inside-diameter tolerances per EN ISO 4671; typical mass-per-metre examples in the standard: 25 mm ≈ 0.18 kg/m; 38 mm ≈ 0.24 kg/m; 40–45 mm ≈ 0.29 kg/m; 50–52 mm ≈ 0.35 kg/m.
  • Hydrostatic tests: Normal working deformation limits, proof pressure (2.25 MPa), and minimum burst pressure (4.5 MPa) (all gauge pressures). Kink pressure and dimensional stability (twist, length/diameter change) also specified.
  • Durability tests: Adhesion between lining and jacket (≥ 1.0 kN/m), accelerated ageing (burst reduction ≤ 25% and adhesion ≥ 0.9 kN/m after ageing), low-temperature flexibility (no cracking after cycles), hot surface resistance (200 °C), and resistance to kinking.
  • Testing & quality control: Type tests, production tests and guidance for batch testing with frequencies defined in Annexes. EN 15889:2011 is referenced for specific test methods.
  • Marking: Manufacturer, EN number/date, inside diameter, maximum working pressure (MPa/bar), manufacture quarter/year, lower test temperature if applicable, and approval/certification details.

Applications and users

  • Applications: Fixed fire hose systems in buildings - wall hydrants and fixed cabinets - for occupant/manual firefighting and small-fire control. Suitable for marine or aggressive environments when used with wall hydrants per EN 671-2.
  • Who uses this standard: Hose manufacturers, fire safety equipment designers, procurement officers, installers, building owners, testing laboratories and certification bodies ensuring compliance for fixed fire-fighting hose systems.
