prEN 10307 is a CEN draft European Standard for ultrasonic testing of austenitic and austenitic-ferritic stainless steel flat products. It specifies a reflection-method procedure for detecting internal discontinuities in flat products from 6 mm to 200 mm thick and defines quality classes for the product body and edges.
What does prEN 10307 specify?
prEN 10307 specifies how to carry out ultrasonic testing of uncoated stainless steel flat products for internal discontinuities. It also organizes the inspection into body and edge zones, with quality classes for each.
The document is structured around the test principle, procedure, personnel qualification, equipment, sensitivity setting, scanning, evaluation, acceptance criteria, and reporting. Annex A gives equivalent terms in several European languages, which is useful when the standard is used across multilingual supply chains.
What are the key requirements of prEN 10307?
prEN 10307 requires testing based on reflected ultrasonic waves with the beam axis approximately perpendicular to the product surface. In practice, the inspector compares discontinuity echoes with a reference flat-bottomed hole response, and only echoes above the reference level are taken into account.
Agreement between purchaser and supplier
Clause 4 requires agreement on the testing stage, the zones to be tested, the quality class or classes, recording levels, any special scanning or equipment needs, the evaluation technique, sensitivity-setting method, whether the purchaser will witness the test, and whether a written procedure needs approval. This matters because the inspection plan has to match the order and the acceptance target before testing starts.
Procedure and personnel
Clause 6 requires a written procedure, which may be a product specification, a dedicated procedure, or this document plus application details. The procedure must cover the item, references, personnel qualification, stage of manufacture, examination zones, surface preparation, couplant, equipment, settings, scanning plan, operations, recording levels, discontinuity characterization, acceptance criteria, and report content.
Clause 7 requires qualified and certified personnel under the responsibility of a qualified and certified Level 3 person in accordance with EN ISO 9712. For buyers and quality managers, this means the competence chain is part of the method, not an optional extra.
Equipment, couplant, and checking
Clause 8 sets requirements for the instrument, probe, standard blocks, reference blocks or plates, and couplant. Manual testing uses A-scan presentation, probes normally operate in the 1 MHz to 5 MHz range, and the probe type depends on product thickness. The same couplant must be used for setting, scanning, and evaluation so the response stays consistent.
Clause 9 requires routine checking of the combined equipment for manual testing. This is what keeps the setup stable between calibration, scanning, and reporting.
Sensitivity setting and scanning
Clause 12 requires sensitivity setting with reference to EN ISO 16810 and EN ISO 16811, using back-wall and flat-bottom-hole responses to build characteristic curves. The setting must be checked during use, and if the back-wall echo drops significantly without a discontinuity echo, the area has to be re-set and re-tested.
Clause 13 limits manual scanning speed and defines how the body and edges are scanned. The body is checked on a grid or equivalent coverage pattern, and the edges are tested over defined edge-zone widths. This matters because coverage and speed directly affect the chance of finding small or isolated indications.
Evaluation and acceptance
Clauses 14 and 15 define how indications are measured and how they are judged against the recording levels and acceptance criteria. The document provides separate criteria for body testing with dual-transducer probes or single-transducer probes, and separate criteria for edge testing. The quality classes for the body are S1, SA, S2 and S3, and the edge classes are E1 to E4.
What terms does prEN 10307 define?
prEN 10307 uses several defined terms that control how indications are described and reported:
- Internal discontinuity - any imperfection within the thickness of the flat product, such as planar or laminar imperfections or inclusion bands.
- Defect - an internal discontinuity that exceeds the specified size or population-density limits.
- Population density - the number of individual internal discontinuities in a specified area or edge length range.
- Manual testing - testing where the operator moves the probe by hand and reads the ultrasonic indication directly.
- Automated and semi-automated testing - testing with mechanized probe movement and software-based data acquisition; semi-automatic testing still needs operator validation.
- Back-wall echo - the echo from the far surface of the product, used as a reference for setting and checking sensitivity.
- Couplant - the medium between probe and surface that supports sound transmission during testing.
Who uses prEN 10307?
prEN 10307 is used by stainless steel producers, NDT operators, inspection bodies, and quality managers who need a common method for product acceptance. It is also relevant to purchasers and suppliers who must agree inspection coverage, quality class, and acceptance criteria at ordering stage.
The standard is aimed at flat austenitic and austenitic-ferritic stainless steel products, especially where internal soundness is checked before delivery, further processing, or welding.
What changed in prEN 10307 from the previous edition?
prEN 10307 will supersede EN 10307:2001. The draft states these significant technical changes:
- the scope was modified
- the normative references were updated
- definition 3.5 was updated
- the principle in Clause 5 was developed
- a new body quality class, S_A, was added
- the sensitivity-setting method in Clause 12 was updated
- the manual scanning speed was changed to 500 mm/s
- some edge-testing elements in Clause 14 were modified
- the acceptance-criteria values in Tables 5 and 6 were updated
Which standards are used with prEN 10307?
prEN 10307 relies on several normative references that provide the broader NDT framework:
- EN ISO 9712 - qualification and certification of NDT personnel
- EN ISO 16810 - general principles for ultrasonic testing
- EN ISO 16811 - sensitivity and range setting
- EN ISO 16827 - characterization and sizing of discontinuities
- EN 1330-1 and EN 1330-2 - general NDT terminology
- EN ISO 5577 - ultrasonic testing vocabulary
- EN ISO 2400 - standard block No. 1
- EN ISO 18563-1, EN ISO 18563-2, EN ISO 18563-3 - phased array equipment characterization and verification
- EN ISO 22232-1, EN ISO 22232-2, EN ISO 22232-3 - ultrasonic test equipment characterization and verification
What does the prEN 10307 document contain?
prEN 10307 contains the full test method and the acceptance framework needed to apply it in production or supply agreements. It includes tables for probe type selection, edge-zone width, recording levels, and acceptance criteria for body and edge testing, plus a figure that explains the terms used in the method.
Annex A gives equivalent terms in English, French, German, Italian, and Dutch. The bibliography points to related ultrasonic testing standards for flat steel products and related ISO work.

any imperfection lying within the thickness of the flat product, e.g planar or laminar imperfection, single-
plane or multi-plane inclusion bands or clusters
Note 1 to entry: It is referred to in the text as discontinuity.
3.2
defect
internal discontinuity, i.e. exceeding the specified maximum size or population density limits
3.3
population density
number of individual internal discontinuities of a size greater than a specified minimum size and less
than a specified maximum size per specified area of body or length of edge zone
3.4
manual testing
testing by an operator applying an ultrasonic probe, or probes, to the flat product surface, manually
executing the appropriate scanning pattern on the flat product surface and assessing ultrasonic signal
indications on the ultrasonic instrument either by direct viewing or by built-in signal amplitude alarm
devices
3.5
automated and semi-automated testing
testing using a mechanized means of applying the ultrasonic probe or probes to, and executing the
appropriate scanning pattern on the flat product surface, together with ultrasonic signal indication
evaluation by using fully automated software-based data acquisition
Note 1 to entry: Such testing shall be either fully automatic, or semi-automatic when the operator performs basic
equipment operation functions and validates testing results.
4 Items for agreements
The following aspects concerning ultrasonic testing shall be agreed between the purchaser and supplier
at the time of the enquiry or order:
a) the manufacturing stage(s) at which ultrasonic testing shall be performed (see Clause 10);
b) the volume(s) to be tested and whether grid scanning coverage or complete scanning coverage is
required (see Clause 13);
c) the Quality Class required, or the Quality Classes and the zones to which they apply (see Clause 15);
d) the applicable recording level and acceptance criteria if different from those detailed in Tables 3 to 6;
prEN 10307:2025 (E)
e) whether any special scanning coverage, equipment or couplant is required in addition to that detailed
in Clauses 8 and 13;
f) the techniques to evaluate discontinuities (see Clause 14);
g) the technique(s) to be used for setting sensitivity (see Clause 12);
h) whether the test is to be conducted in the presence of the purchaser or his representative;
i) whether a written procedure shall be submitted for approval by the purchaser (see Clause 6).
5 Principle
The method shall be based on the reflection of ultrasonic waves, the beam axis of which is approximately
perpendicular to the surface of the product.
The examination shall consist of:
a) locating and evaluation of discontinuity by comparing the amplitude of the discontinuity echo with
the amplitude of the echo of a flat-bottomed hole of a given diameter and located at the same depth
as the discontinuity (DAC, DGS, or equivalent methods);
NOTE Only those discontinuities giving an echo amplitude greater than that obtained with the reference flat-
bottomed hole are taken into consideration.
b) if applicable according to Clause 14, determining the contour of the discontinuity being defined by
the positions of the centre of the probe corresponding to an echo amplitude of half the maximum
amplitude of the discontinuity under consideration (6 dB drop method).
The width of the discontinuity shall be determined perpendicular to the direction of rolling. The
length shall be determined in the rolling direction.
The examination shall be carried out during the first ultrasonic scan for all the flat product thicknesses
and from one side only.
If areas with significant drop of backwall echo or the signal-to-noise ratio are observed, the testing
conditions shall be adjusted in order to test these areas with the required sensitivity level in accordance
with Clause 12.
Other methods of testing, e.g. by phased-array technique or other test equipment, may be used at the
manufacturer's discretion provided that they give equivalent results to those obtained under the
conditions of this document. In the event of a dispute, only the method defined in this document prevails.
Testing of flat product of thickness less than 6 mm or higher than 200 mm can be the subject of special
agreements between the parties concerned.
6 Procedure
The testing shall be carried out in the place of production or on the premises of the supplier. If specified
on the order, the testing may take place in the presence of the purchaser or his representative (see
Clause 4 h)).
Ultrasonic testing shall be performed in accordance with a written procedure. Where specified in the
enquiry or order, the written procedure shall be submitted to the purchaser for approval prior to testing.
1 In this case, all steps should be taken to ensure that the production process is not disturbed.
prEN 10307:2025 (E)
This written procedure shall be in the form of:
— a product specification ; or
— a procedure written specifically for the application ; or
— this document may be used if it is accompanied by examination details specific to the application.
