Emergency safety showers - Part 3: Non plumbed-in body showers
This European Standard is a product specification, giving minimum performance requirements for non plumbed-in emergency safety body showers.
It is applicable to body showers filled with a washing fluid by the manufacturer and to empty devices to be filled prior to putting into service. Both variations are for first aid use when the body or parts of the body have been exposed to harmful substances or heat.
Requirements are also given concerning labelling, marking and information to be supplied by the manufacturer.
Throughout this standard, the term non plumbed-in emergency safety body shower is referred to as body shower.

Overview
SIST EN 15154-3:2009 is a European Standard established by CEN that specifies minimum performance requirements for non plumbed-in emergency safety body showers. These devices are critical first aid equipment designed to provide immediate washing for the body or parts of the body exposed to harmful substances or heat. Unlike fixed plumbed-in showers, these body showers are self-contained units filled with washing fluid either by the manufacturer or just before use.
This standard defines design, efficacy, labeling, and operational criteria to ensure these safety devices are effective, safe, and easy to use. It plays a vital role in protecting personnel working in hazardous environments such as chemical laboratories, allowing for rapid response to chemical splashes or thermal injuries.
Key Topics
Performance Requirements
- Efficacy: Devices must effectively reduce harmful substances or heat effects on the body.
- Washing Fluid Quality: Fluids used must be nontoxic, safe, and conform to defined sterility and potable water standards.
- Flow Control: Showers should deliver controlled washing fluid flow at a safe velocity to avoid injury.
- Container Safety: Materials must not degrade the washing fluid or vice versa, and containers should hold sufficient fluid volume for effective washing.
Types of Body Showers
- Single Use: Designed for one-time fluid application, fitted with tamper-evident seals.
- Multiple Use: Allows repeated washing, designed to prevent cross-contamination.
- Refillable: Can be refilled with washing fluid, must have tamper-evident devices and cleaning protocols to maintain safety and efficacy.
Functional Criteria
- Quick activation (within 5 seconds) by one person.
- User-friendly design for handheld control and temporary deactivation to conserve fluid.
- Portability features like wheels for transportable units or weight limits for portable versions for ease of handling.
Labeling and Information
- Mandatory product labeling in compliance with EN 1041 and EN 980, including manufacturer details, batch codes, sterilization status, usage instructions, warnings, and effective fluid volume.
- Additional user instructions provided separately to ensure safe operation, maintenance, and correct placement near hazard areas.
Applications
SIST EN 15154-3:2009 body showers are essential safety equipment in workplaces where chemical exposure or thermal burns are potential risks. Typical environments include:
- Chemical Laboratories: Immediate washdown of skin contamination with acids, alkalis, or other hazardous substances.
- Industrial Facilities: Quick response to accidental exposure to harmful chemicals or heat sources without reliance on fixed plumbing.
- Emergency Response Kits: Portable or transportable units used by first responders or in areas lacking fixed safety showers.
- Production Sites: Where flexible safety equipment is needed to supplement existing fixed installations.
Employing non plumbed-in body showers ensures first aid can begin at the exact injury location, minimizing chemical absorption or burn severity before professional medical treatment.

- EN 15154-2: Plumbed-in eyewash units – Applies to fixed eyewash stations for eye irrigation.
- EN 15154-4: Non plumbed-in eyewash units – Specifies self-contained eye wash solutions similar in concept to body showers.
- EN 1041: Information supplied by the manufacturer of medical devices – Requirements for labeling and user information referenced in EN 15154-3.
- EN 980: Symbols for use in medical device labeling – Standard for labeling symbols used on safety equipment.
- EN 556-1 and EN 556-2: Sterilization of medical devices – Defines sterility requirements for washing fluids when solutions are used.
Implementing SIST EN 15154-3:2009 ensures the availability of reliable, easy-to-use, and safe non plumbed-in emergency safety body showers that can significantly improve first aid response times in hazardous environments. Proper adherence to this standard promotes workplace safety, compliance, and effective emergency preparedness.
