INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION
SPECIFICATIONS FOR UNUSED SYNTHETIC ORGANIC ESTERS
FOR ELECTRICAL PURPOSES
FOREWORD
1) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by Technical Committees on
which all the National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as
possible, an international consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
2) They have the form of recommendations for international use and they are accepted by the National
Committees in that sense.
3) In order to promote international unification, the IEC expresses the wish that all National Committees
should adopt the text of the IEC recommendation for their national rules in so far as national conditions will
permit. Any divergence between the IEC recommendation and the corresponding national rules should, as
far as possible, be clearly indicated in the latter.
4) The IEC has not laid down any procedure concerning marking as an indication of approval and has no
responsibility when an item of equipment is declared to comply with one of its recommendations.
This International Standard has been prepared by IEC Technical Committee No. 10: Fluids
for electrotechnical applications.
The text of this standard is based on the following documents:
DIS Report on Voting
10(CO)259 10(CO)265
Full information on the voting for the approval of this standard can be found in the Voting
Report indicated in the above table.

SPECIFICATION FOR UNUSED SYNTHETIC
ORGANIC ESTERS FOR ELECTRICAL PURPOSES
1 Scope
This International Standard specifies characteristics of synthetic organic esters intended
for use as insulating liquids in transformers and other electrical equipment.
- Clauses 3 to 8 describe the synthetic organic esters and give general guidance on
their properties, safety, storage and disposal. They also give requirements for
packaging, labelling and sampling.
- Clause 9 describes the test methods that shall be employed to test the properties of
synthetic organic esters.
- Clauses 11 and 12 specify the required characteristics of synthetic organic esters
intended for use in transformers and capacitors. Other specification sheets will be
added when required.
NOTE - Maintenance of esters in equipment will be covered in a separate publication.
2 Normative references
The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute
provisions of this International Standard. At the time of publication, the editions indicated
were valid. All standards are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this
International Standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most
recent editions of the standards indicated below. Members of IEC and ISO maintain
registers of currently valid International Standar.

3 Description and general properties
The synthetic organic esters to which this standard applies are liquids which contain only
carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. They are prepared from mono or polyhydric alcohols and
mono or polybasic aliphatic or aromatic acids.
Commercial products may be based on single esters or a mixture of esters and may
contain stabilizers.
Synthetic organic esters selected for use in transformers have high flash and fire points
and are therefore relatively difficult to ignite. Their other physical properties are in most
cases similar to those of mineral insulating oils. They may, however, have slightly higher
viscosities than conventional transformer mineral insulating oils.
Esters are more sensitive to moisture than mineral oils and this aspect will need to be
considered in their use and maintenance.
4 Safety
The handling of ester liquids is not hazardous to health. Although not skin irritants, esters
