Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2. www.iso.org/directives

standards.
NOTE   ISO/TS 34101-5 is not yet registered in the ISO database.
This document is based on a low threshold/high bar approach incorporating three levels of compliance:
Entry, medium, high. This approach is applied to ensure specific continual improvement by the
organization over the specified timeframe by those applying the requirements of this document.
Performance-driven objectives, as well as capacity-enhancement objectives are specified at farm and
organization level.
This document addresses the following aspects:
— Clause 4: General requirements
— Clause 5: Economic-related requirements
— Clause 6: Social-related requirements
— Clause 7: Environmental-related requirements.
Many requirements deal with more than just economic, just social, or just environmental aspects.
Where possible, overlapping requirements have been clustered together. Some topics, however, are
dealt with in several places in these performance requirements.
In this document:
— “shall” and indicates a requirement;
— “should” indicates a recommendation;
— “may” indicates a permission;
— “can” indicates a possibility or a capability.
Information marked “NOTE” is for guidance in understanding or clarifying the associated requirement.

Part 2:
Requirements for performance (related to economic,
social, and environmental aspects)
1 Scope
This document specifies performance requirements related to economic, social and environmental
aspects for sustainable cocoa production - including post-harvest processes, if applicable.
NOTE Post-harvest includes fermentation and drying of cocoa beans, as well as sorting, packaging and storage

4 General requirements
The organization shall fulfil one of the requirement levels specified in the Tables in Clauses 5, 6 and 7,
being either:
a) entry level;
b) medium level; or
c) high level.
© ISO 2016 – All rights reserved 1

---------------------- Page: 9 ----------------------
oSIST prEN ISO 34101-2:2016
ISO/DIS 34101-2:2016(E)

The organization can adopt any level as a start level and shall be on a path towards the higher level
until the high level is reached. The path from entry to medium level may take up to 60 months. The path
from medium to high level may take up to 60 months.
Requirements are specified for each level in the tables within Clauses 5 to 7. Requirements are marked
with “X” or “12”. Requirements marked with “12” do not apply in relation to a newly registered farmer.
Those requirements shall be fulfilled not later than 12 month after registration of that particular farmer.
The organization shall document:
1) the first date of conformity with the requirements of ISO 34101-1 and ISO 34101-2;
2) the requirement level (either entry, medium or high) adopted as the stat level.
NOTE 1 An organization can choose to start at the medium or high level as an alternative to start at the
entry level.
NOTE 2 The end goal is sustainability. However, obtaining sustainability is a process to which this document
and ISO 34101-1 contribute.
NOTE 3 The entry level is intended to enable a majority of farmers to apply a process leading towards
sustainably production of cocoa beans, through a stepwise approach.
5 Requirements for economic aspects
5.1 Rationale for economic-related requirements
The requirements for economic aspects are specified with a view to:
a) upscaling the production of sustainable cocoa beans in a cost-efficient manner;
b) improving farmer income and livelihoods, including improving productivity of cocoa farming,
considering diversification of production and income, and facilitating access to markets for cocoa
farmers;
c) supporting the improvement of the standard of living and social conditions of populations engaged
in cocoa farming.
One of the key objectives is to empower cocoa farmers to make informed choices about activities and
investments planned on their farms. While there are benefits to increasing yields and better managing
cocoa quality (to decrease losses due to poor farming practices or pests and disease), improvements
entail additional efforts and investments for all actors in the chain, including farmers, organizations,
and traders.
While training, coaching and other support activities provided by an organization can be perceived in
and by themselves as a benefit for farmers, the key is to establish whether support provided actually
results in improved performance, i.e. improved productivity/quality or even time-management at farm
level. Clear monitoring indicators need to be agreed to allow both the farmers and the organization to
monitor their performance over time.
5.2 Cocoa farm diagnostic and cocoa farm development plan (CFDP)
5.2.1 Rationale for cocoa farm diagnostic and cocoa farm development plan (CFDP)
As a starting point, farmers who wish to join an organization applying for conformity to ISO 34101-1
and ISO 34101-2 need to be in a position to understand how the requirements expected at farm level
will impact their activities.
The cocoa farm diagnostic (see Annex C of ISO 34101-1) is designed to capture the current and desired
state of the farm, and the time, services, interventions and investments needed to attain the desired
2 © ISO 2016 – All rights reserved

status. The cocoa farm diagnostic will be built on information collected with interested farmers in
order to allow them to decide whether they wish to join.
Findings documented in the diagnostic will be built into the cocoa farm development plan (CFDP).
This will be more specifically tailored at farm level to document key junctures and interventions, and
measure progress against previously identified targets for improvement.
5.2.2 Requirements for the cocoa farm diagnostic
The requirements for the cocoa farm diagnostic are specified in ISO 34101-1.
5.2.3 Requirements for cocoa farm development plan
General requirements for the cocoa farm development plan (CFDP) are specified in ISO 34101-1:20##,
8.2.2.
