Standard Specification for Water Trap for Diesel Exhaust

ABSTRACT
This specification covers the material, dimensions, and construction of a water trap for diesel exhaust. The diesel exhaust water trap system shall consist of a tank and baffles manufactured from a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-columbium alloy, with gaskets made of nonmetallic materials. A minimum of three baffles shall be installed. The traps shall withstand the maximum temperatures specified, be free of paint, and be so designed such as to prevent sea backwash from entering the diesel exhaust system. The trap and piping systems shall prevent dirt accumulation, with the welding being of small, even beading, free of slag and splatter. Pneumatic proof testing of each trap shall be performed with no visible seam leakage and shall conform to the requirements specified.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers the material, dimensions, and construction of diesel exhaust water traps, which shall be required whenever the exhaust is to be expelled through the hull of the vessel.
1.2 The traps are designed to prevent sea backwash from entering the diesel exhaust system.
1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses after SI units are provided for information only and are not considered standard.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM F1431-92(2021) - Standard Specification for Water Trap for Diesel Exhaust is an essential international standard published by ASTM International. It establishes the requirements for the materials, dimensions, construction, and testing of water traps used in diesel exhaust systems, specifically for scenarios where exhaust must be expelled through a vessel’s hull. The aim is to prevent sea backwash from entering the diesel engine exhaust, ensuring reliable and safe marine diesel operations.

This standard is intended for manufacturers, shipbuilders, system designers, and maintenance professionals who require reliable, high-quality components in marine diesel exhaust systems. ASTM F1431-92(2021) aims to promote system integrity, improve operational safety, and support global consistency in maritime exhaust system manufacturing and installation.

Key Topics

  • Material Specifications: Requires the use of nickel-chromium-molybdenum-columbium alloys for tanks and baffles, ensuring durability and corrosion resistance in marine environments. Gaskets must be made from nonmetallic materials and withstand high operating temperatures.

  • Construction Requirements: Specifies a minimum of three baffles per trap, a hand hole positioned at 45°, and welding that is small, even, and free of slag and spatter. Traps must be free of paint and designed to minimize dirt accumulation and prevent sea backwash.

  • Dimensional Standards: Provides minimum height, diameter, and free area requirements relative to the exhaust and outlet lines. Dimensions and configurations are given in SI units as standard, with imperial units in parentheses for reference.

  • Testing and Quality Assurance: Each water trap must undergo pneumatic proof testing at specified pressure levels to confirm absence of seam leakage. Additional shock testing may be applied per MIL-S-901 if specified by the purchaser.

  • Marking and Packaging: Requires weatherproof tagging and compliant packaging. No asbestos or asbestiform materials are permitted in packaging materials.

  • Compliance and Inspection: Purchasers have the right to inspect manufacturing processes and final products at the supplier’s facility to ensure adherence to the standard.

Applications

  • Marine Diesel Exhaust Systems: Primarily used in ships and marine vessels where diesel exhaust is expelled through the hull, making effective water traps critical for preventing backflow and potential water ingress.

  • Piping System Integrity: Ensures long-term reliability and performance of exhaust piping in harsh marine environments by mandating robust materials and precise construction.

  • Naval and Commercial Vessels: Applicable to both military and civilian maritime sectors, including commercial shipping, workboats, and naval craft requiring compliance with international maritime standards.

  • Shipbuilding and Maintenance: Used by shipyards, component manufacturers, and maintenance crews to specify, fabricate, or replace diesel exhaust water traps to globally recognized benchmarks.
