The EN 1804-3:2020 standard establishes comprehensive safety requirements specific to hydraulic and electro hydraulic control systems used in underground mining contexts. With a clear scope, it delineates not only the components covered-such as hydraulic valves, control elements, pipes, hose assemblies, and measuring devices-but also the operational conditions for these hydraulic systems, emphasizing temperatures from -10 °C to 60 °C. One of the standard's significant strengths is its thorough identification of potential hazards connected to hydraulic and electro hydraulic control device operations. It delves into various areas that might lead to hazardous situations, effectively addressing concerns that could result in injuries or health issues for workers. By considering factors such as firedamp and combustible dusts, the standard is particularly relevant to the mining industry, where such hazards are prevalent. Moreover, the document provides structured methods aimed at mitigating risks associated with hydraulic systems. The detailed list of significant hazards in Clause 4 serves as a critical guideline for manufacturers and operators, enabling them to implement necessary safety measures in line with the standard's recommendations. However, it is important to note that certain aspects are excluded from this standard, such as requirements for use in corrosive environments and safety during the construction and decommissioning phases. This delineation helps focus the standard on specific operational safety without overextending its scope, ensuring clarity for stakeholders in the mining sector. This standard aligns well with the broader framework provided by other parts of the EN 1804 series, establishing a cohesive safety strategy across hydraulic powered roof supports. Overall, EN 1804-3:2020 is an essential document that enhances safety protocols for hydraulic and electro hydraulic control systems in underground mining, maintaining relevance amid evolving operational challenges and technological advancements.
