External fire exposure of roofs and roof coverings - Extended application of test results from CEN/TS 1187

This Technical Specification gives guidance on the process and development of extended fields of application using test results obtained from CEN/TS 1187 test 1 to 4, and included in test reports, and other relevant information in order to evaluate and classify the performance of roofs/roof coverings. This Technical Specification provides a methodology to consider the possible effect(s) on classification to EN 13501 5 from single or multiple changes to the individual product and end-use application parameters of the roof/roof covering.
Specific application guidance is given in Annexe A, Annex B, Annex C and Annex D for CEN/TS 1187 tests 1 to 4 respectively.

Diese Technische Spezifikation liefert einen Leitfaden für den Prozess und die Entwicklung der erweiterten Anwendungsbereiche unter der Anwendung der in den Prüfungen 1 bis 4 nach CEN/TS 1187 erzielten und in Prüfberichten enthaltenen Prüfergebnisse und anderer einschlägiger Informationen zur Bewertung und Klassifizierung der Leistungsfähigkeit von Dächern/Bedachungen. Diese Technische Spezifikation legt eine Vorgehensweise fest, mit der die möglichen Auswirkungen einer einzelnen oder mehrfachen Änderung der einzelnen Produktparameter und Endanwendungsparameter des Daches/der Bedachung auf die Klassifizierung nach EN 13501 5 in Betracht zu ziehen sind.
In den Anhängen A, B, C und D werden spezifische Leitlinien für die Anwendung der Prüfungen 1 bis 4 nach CEN/TS 1187 gegeben.

La présente Spécification technique donne des lignes directrices concernant le processus et le
développement de champs d'application étendus en utilisant les résultats d'essai obtenus par les essais 1 à 4
de la CEN/TS 1187, et inclus dans des rapports d'essai, ainsi que d'autres informations pertinentes afin
d'évaluer et de classer les performances de toitures/couvertures. La présente Spécification technique fournit
une méthodologie permettant d'étudier le ou les effets éventuels sur le classement selon l'EN 13501-5 de
modifications simples ou multiples apportées aux produits individuels et aux paramètres d’utilisation finale de
la toiture/couverture.
Des lignes directrices d'application spécifiques sont données respectivement dans l’Annexe A, l’Annexe B,
l’Annexe C et l’Annexe D pour les essais 1 à 4 de la CEN/TS 1187.

This Technical Specification (CEN/TS) was approved by CEN on 14 April 2013 for provisional application.

The period of validity of this CEN/TS is limited initially to three years. After two years the members of CEN will be requested to submit their
comments, particularly on the question whether the CEN/TS can be converted into a European Standard.

CEN members are required to announce the existence of this CEN/TS in the same way as for an EN and to make the CEN/TS available
promptly at national level in an appropriate form. It is permissible to keep conflicting national standards in force (in parallel to the CEN/TS)
until the final decision about the possible conversion of the CEN/TS into an EN is reached.

This European Standard provides the fire performance classification procedures for roofs/roof coverings exposed to external fire based on the four test methods given in CEN/TS 1187:2012 and the relevant extended application rules.
For the classification of a roof/roof covering, only those test methods and those application rules need to be applied for which the corresponding classification is envisaged.
Products are considered in relation to their end use application.
NOTE   The distinction between roofs with a steep slope and facades, in terms of the test and classification standard to be applied, may be subject to national regulations.
General information on the four test methods in CEN/TS 1187 is given in Annex A.

Test methods for external fire exposure to roofs

This Technical Specification specifies four methods for determining the performance of roofs to external fire exposure. The four methods assess the performance of roofs under the following conditions:
a)   test 1 - with burning brands;
b)   test 2 - with burning brands and wind;
c)   test 3 - with burning brands, wind and supplementary radiant heat;
d)   test 4 - with two stages  incorporating burning brands, wind and supplementary radiant heat.
The tests assess the fire spread across the external surface of the roof, the fire spread within the roof (tests 1, 2 and 3), the fire penetration (tests 1, 3 and 4) and the production of flaming droplets or debris falling from the underside of the roof or from the exposed surface (tests 1, 3 and 4).
Tests 2 and 3 are not applicable to geometrically irregular roofs or roof mounted appliances, e.g. ventilators and roof lights.
NOTE   The four tests listed above do not imply any ranking order. Each test stands on its own without the possibility to substitute or exchange one for another.
