Overview
EN 284:2006 (CEN) specifies dimensions and general requirements for non‑stackable swap bodies of class C with a gross mass up to 16 t. Class C swap bodies are fitted with bottom corner fittings positioned in accordance with the 1C (20') ISO container specification (see ISO 668) and are intended for combined transport by road and rail (not for carriage on container ships). EN 284:2006 updates and supersedes earlier editions and defines the basic interchangeability, handling and safety features required for these transport units.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Dimensions and ratings: External dimensions, tolerances and rating (R) tables define permitted envelopes and ensure no part projects beyond those boundaries.
- Bottom fittings: Four bottom corner fittings positioned per the standard; apertures comply with ISO 1161 (Annex A).
- Grappler arm lifting areas: Four grappler zones are specified. Each area must be either 850 mm long (from adjacent corner axis) or 500 mm if fitted with end stops. Safety lip minimum length: 500 mm. Wear plates or curtain reinforcement recommended to protect grappler contact areas.
- Steering tunnel: A longitudinal steering tunnel with a minimum clear width (≥ 60 mm) and load‑bearing outer edges located close to bottom fitting level, to ease loading and vehicle alignment.
- Front stop: A front stop is required, minimum width 800 mm, minimum height 8 mm, and centred within a specific zone to control vehicle positioning.
- Supporting legs: Four foldable legs (Type A2 specified) with square foot‑plates of at least 95 x 95 mm, safety devices, visible securing when folded, and specified clear height/width beneath the body (Annex B). Legs must resist tests per EN 283.
- Optional features: Fork‑lift pockets (through base), tarpaulins (EN 12641‑1/‑2), cargo securing devices (EN 12640 and EN 12642) - curtainsiders must include cargo securing systems.
- Marking and safety signage: Identification per EN 13044, UIC plate for rail operation (UIC 596‑6), warning sign for forklift overturn risk, and grappler areas marked in yellow (≥ 400 mm × 100 mm).
Applications and users
EN 284:2006 is used by:
- Swap‑body manufacturers and designers to ensure interchangeability and regulatory compliance.
- Logistics operators and freight forwarders for procurement and safe handling of non‑stackable class C swap bodies.
- Rail and road combined‑transport operators to assure fit on vehicles and wagons.
- Vehicle body builders and loading equipment designers (grapplers, forklifts) for interface compatibility.
- Certification and testing bodies performing strength, handling and marking inspections.
