Overview

EN 12640:2019 (CEN) defines minimum requirements and test methods for lashing points used to secure cargo on commercial vehicles and intermodal loading units. The standard covers design, strength, number and layout, operational angles, verification and marking of lashing points and multi‑point lashing systems. It excludes vehicles/units manufactured before publication, units for bulk materials or specialised cargo, delivery vans conforming to ISO 27956, and ISO series 1 freight containers.

Key Topics

  • Scope and exclusions: Applies to new commercial vehicles and intermodal loading units; explicit exclusions listed in the scope.
  • Definitions & angles: Defines lashing angles - vertical (α) 0°–90°, longitudinal (βx) 0°–180° and transverse (βy); ±5° deviation allowed.
  • Lashing capacity (LC): Minimum LC by gross vehicle mass (m):
    • m ≤ 750 kg → 400 daN
    • 750 < m ≤ 3 500 kg → 600 daN
    • 3 500 < m ≤ 7 500 kg → 800 daN
    • 7 500 < m ≤ 12 000 kg → 1 000 daN
    • m > 12 000 kg or intermodal units → 2 000 daN
  • Design requirements:
    • Single lashing points should not project above the loading platform when at rest.
    • Lashing points should transmit forces into structural CTU elements and be located near platform edges or outer frame (exceptions for GVM < 3 500 kg).
    • Multi‑point systems must accept reference hooks and resist specified forces along 1 m at three positions simultaneously.
  • Number & layout:
    • Number of lashing point pairs n = max(loading length/0.85, (payload × 0.75)/LC), rounded down but not less than 2.
    • Max spacing between adjacent lashing points: 1 000 mm (axle areas ≤ 1 200 mm); distance from front/rear end ≤ 500 mm.
  • Testing & verification:
    • Static tests at 1.00×LC (no visible deformation) and 1.25×LC (no permanent deformation impairing function), applied for at least 3 minutes in the three most unfavourable directions.
    • Test certificate (Annex A) and test report (Annex B) requirements.
  • Marking & maintenance:
    • Visible label (blue background, white text, min. 150 × 100 mm) showing LC [daN] and operational angles.
    • Manufacturer must supply user instructions and maintenance guidance.

Applications

Who uses EN 12640:2019:

  • Vehicle and intermodal unit manufacturers (design & production)
  • Fleet operators and logistics providers (safe cargo restraint planning)
  • Cargo securing engineers and load planners
  • Testing laboratories and conformity assessors
  • Regulators and procurement teams specifying equipment to CEN standards

Practical benefits: ensures consistent lashing point performance, improves safety of road and intermodal cargo transport, and provides verifiable test methods and labelling for supply-chain transparency.

Related Standards

  • EN 12195 series (lashing devices and web lashing) - complementary for lashing equipment and calculation methods
