EN 4500-004:2026 is a CEN aerospace standard that sets the specific rules for drafting and presenting material standards for titanium and titanium alloys. It is aimed at the people who write, revise, or interpret aerospace metallic material standards, so the resulting product standards use a common structure and vocabulary. In practice, it tells you how to present the material designation, form, melting route, condition, tests, and qualification information in a standard.

What does EN 4500-004:2026 specify?

EN 4500-004:2026 belongs to the EN 4500 series, which specifies the rules for drafting and presenting metallic material standards for aerospace applications. This part focuses on titanium and titanium alloys, so it is a drafting rulebook rather than a product specification for one particular alloy.

The document is organized into four main clauses plus a bibliography, with informative annexes that show how to complete each part of the template. The annexes are practical examples for standard writers.

AnnexWhat it covers
ACompletion of the title page
BCompletion of the introduction
CCompletion of the scope, normative references, terms and definitions, and requirements
DCompletion of Table 1
ECompletion of the bibliography

What are the key requirements of EN 4500-004:2026?

EN 4500-004:2026 gives the wording and structure to use when drafting titanium and titanium alloy material standards for aerospace. Its main job is to keep titles, scopes, tables, and references consistent across the series.

Title and naming rules

Clause 4.2 sets the title structure. For titanium and titanium alloys, the standard tells drafters how to state the method of melting, the form, and any additional information entries.

This matters because the title is often the first thing buyers, engineers, and auditors read. A standard drafted under these rules should tell them quickly what product form and processing route the standard covers.

Clause 4.2.2 lists the allowed melting expressions, including non consumable electrode vacuum melted, consumable electrode vacuum arc melted, consumable electrode vacuum arc remelted, multiple melted, plasma cold hearth melted (P.C.H.M.), and electron-beam melted. For forging stock and forgings, only the required grade is indicated in accordance with EN 4800-001.

Form, processing, and use entries

Clause 4.2.3 gives the permitted form terms for sheets, strips, plates, bars, sections, tubes, wires, forging stock, forgings, remelting stock, castings, and rings. Clause 4.2.4 adds the permitted additional information entries, such as structural applications, pressure applications, superplastic forming, machining, forged fasteners, machined fasteners, and welding.

In practice, this controls how a material standard describes the product family and its intended use. That helps avoid ambiguous titles and makes product standards easier to compare.

Table 1 structure and required wording

Clause 4.5 is the core of the document. It sets the line-by-line structure of Table 1, including material designation, chemical composition, method of melting, form, method of production, further intended processing, limit dimensions, technical specification, dimensional standard, delivery condition and heat treatment, test sample and test piece information, direction of test piece, test requirements, inspection lines, notes, typical use, and product qualification.

Clause 4.5.2 requires chemical composition to be written in a defined order. Clause 4.5.10 lists the permitted delivery condition and heat treatment terms, such as not heat treated, annealed, solution treated, quenched, aged, cold worked, hot isostatically pressed (hipped), descaled, machined, ground, pickled, and stress relieved.

This matters because the same material can be specified in several different processed states. The standard makes the state explicit so the supplier and the purchaser are describing the same product.

Clause 4.5.17 states that line 10, thickness of cladding on each face, is not applicable to titanium and titanium alloys. Clause 4.5.27 says line 27 is not used, and clause 4.5.30 says line 97 is not used. Clause 4.5.28 to 4.5.33 cover marking inspection, dimensional inspection, notes, typical use, and product qualification.

Normative use of Table 1 and related documents

Annex C states that the requirements of Table 1 shall be applied and that the documents listed in Table 1 shall be applied. Clause 4.5.27 says the relevant lines from 30 to 94 are completed in accordance with EN 4500-001.

In practice, this means the table is not just a layout aid. It is the normative framework for the material standard, and each referenced line or document contributes to the final specification.

Use of examples and annex templates

Clause 4.1 explains that the examples in the annexes are only illustrations of the drafting rules and may not correspond to real standardized EN semi-finished products. That keeps writers from treating the examples as fixed product definitions.

This matters because the document is a drafting standard. Its examples show how to write a standard correctly, not which titanium products must exist.

What terms does EN 4500-004:2026 define?

EN 4500-004:2026 applies the terms and definitions of EN 4259 and EN 4500-001. It also uses a number of key expressions that are central to drafting titanium material standards.

  • P.C.H.M. - plasma cold hearth melted, one of the permitted melting-route terms in the title and Table 1.
  • hipped - hot isostatically pressed, used as a delivery condition or processing term.
  • Reference heat treatment - the heat treatment taken as the stated reference condition for properties in Table 1.
  • Delivery condition - the condition in which the product is supplied, such as annealed, solution treated, or cold worked.
  • Product qualification - the qualification programme and related requirements for confirming a product standard.
  • C.S.R. - contractile strain ratio, a batch test shown in Annex D.
  • TU2 - the other common industry designation given in Annex C for Titanium alloy Ti-2.5Cu.

Who uses EN 4500-004:2026?

EN 4500-004:2026 is used by standards writers, technical committees, and aerospace material specialists who draft titanium and titanium alloy product standards. It also matters to manufacturers, laboratories, quality teams, and buyers who need to interpret those standards consistently.

In practice, it supports the people who decide how a titanium material standard should be structured, how product forms are named, and how test and qualification information is presented for aerospace applications.

What changed in EN 4500-004:2026 from the previous edition?

EN 4500-004:2026 supersedes EN 4500-004:2024. The stated changes are:

  • addition of line 4.3, “Further intended processing”, and line 5.2, “Dimensional standard”, in the body of the document and in Annex D
  • addition of introductory sentences to Table 1 in Annex C to show that the table is a normative element and that all listed documents shall be applied
  • editorial changes to clarify which references to documents and annexes are normative or informative
  • restructuring and simplification of the document to achieve a single continuous table

Which standards are used with EN 4500-004:2026?

StandardWhat it contributes
EN 4259General terms and definitions for aerospace metallic materials
EN 4500-001General rules for drafting and presenting material standards
EN 4800-001Titanium and titanium alloys technical specification used for product naming and related drafting points
EN 4258General organization of standardization for aerospace metallic materials
EN 4500-002 to EN 4500-006Related drafting-rule parts for other material families and filler metals
EN 4800-002 to EN 4800-006Companion technical specification parts for titanium and titanium alloy product forms
EN ISO 643, EN ISO 4288, EN ISO 8492, EN ISO 8493, EN ISO 12737, ISO 7802, ISO 9649Test and measurement methods referenced in the document examples

What does the EN 4500-004:2026 document contain?

The document contains a full drafting template for titanium and titanium alloy material standards, centered on Table 1 and its line-by-line completion. It also includes example completed pages in Annexes A and B, a worked example for the scope, references, terms, and requirements in Annex C, and a detailed example of Table 1 in Annex D.

Annex D shows how the table can combine chemical composition, heat treatment, test conditions, inspection items, microstructure and macrostructure checks, surface and internal quality checks, and product qualification entries. The bibliography then points to the companion EN and ISO documents used to write and interpret those sections.

— Specific rules for aluminium, aluminium alloys and EN 4500-002;
magnesium alloys
— Specific rules for heat-resisting alloys EN 4500-003;
— Specific rules for titanium and titanium alloys EN 4500-004;
