EN 4500-003:2026 is a CEN European Standard in the Aerospace series. It sets the rules for drafting and presenting metallic material standards for aerospace applications, with specific rules for heat-resisting alloys. It is used by the people who prepare, review, or apply those material standards so that the title, scope, references, Table 1, and annex examples are presented in the same way.

What does EN 4500-003:2026 specify?

EN 4500-003:2026 specifies the rules for drafting and presenting European standards for aerospace metallic materials, and Part 003 gives the specific rules for heat-resisting alloys. The document is a drafting aid, so its main purpose is to standardize how a material standard is written and organized.

The document is organized into clauses 1 to 4.6, followed by informative annexes A to E and a bibliography. Annexes A to E provide completion examples for the title page, introduction, scope and requirements, Table 1, and bibliography.

AnnexWhat it covers
ACompletion of title page
BCompletion of the introduction
CCompletion of scope, normative references, terms and definitions, and requirements
DCompletion of Table 1
ECompletion of the bibliography

What are the key requirements of EN 4500-003:2026?

EN 4500-003:2026 tells standards writers how to build a complete aerospace material standard for heat-resisting alloys. The key point is that the document standardizes the template and the wording, so different material standards can be read and applied in the same way.

Title, scope and structure

Clause 4.1 says the annex examples are only illustrations of the drafting rules and may not correspond to real standardized EN semi-finished products. That matters because the examples guide writing, but they are not a list of approved products.

Clause 4.2 controls the title. It gives the permitted wording for the method of melting, the product form, powder metallurgy terms, and additional information entries. In practice, this is how a standard title shows whether the product is vacuum melted, rolled, drawn, forged, cast, powder based, or intended for a use such as structural, pressure, rivets, fasteners, or welding.

Clause 4.3 points to Annex B for the introduction, and clause 4.4 points to Annex C for the scope, references, terms, definitions, and requirements. That means the document expects these front sections to be completed in a consistent template, not written ad hoc.

Table 1 and the material definition

Clause 4.5 is the core of the document. It sets out Table 1, which is the structure used to define the material standard line by line.

The table starts with material designation, chemical composition, and method of melting. For composition, clause 4.5.2 gives the order of presentation of elements, so the composition section reads in a predictable sequence and users can compare standards more easily.

Clause 4.5.9 adds line 5.2, which states the applicable dimensional standard. Clause 4.5.10 gives the allowed delivery condition and heat treatment terms, such as not heat treated, annealed, solution treated, precipitation treated, tempered, cold worked, hot isostatically pressed (hipped), descaled, machined, ground, as cast, and as forged. In practice, these lines tell the reader what condition the product is supplied in and what heat treatment history applies.

Clause 4.5.12 allows the use condition to repeat the delivery condition or to state delivery condition directly. Clause 4.5.17 says thickness of cladding on each face is not applicable to heat-resisting alloys. Clause 4.5.27 says line 27 is not used, and clause 4.5.30 says line 97 is not used.

Tests, inspection and qualification

Clauses 4.5.18 to 4.5.26 organize the property requirements, including tensile, hardness, shear strength, bending, impact strength, and creep. That matters because the resulting material standard has to state which properties are checked and under what conditions they are measured.

Clause 4.5.26 defines reference heat treatment, which is the heat-treatment condition used as the basis for the stated properties. Clause 4.5.28 and 4.5.29 cover marking inspection and dimensional inspection, so the standard can specify how the product is verified before delivery.

Clauses 4.5.31 to 4.5.33 cover notes, typical use, and product qualification. The qualification line is especially practical: Annex D shows that the qualification programme is agreed between manufacturer and purchaser, and that the exact route depends on whether the technical specification includes qualification requirements.

Clause 4.5.27 and the later lines from 30 to 94 are completed in accordance with EN 4500-001. Annex D shows how those lines are used for items such as microstructure, macrostructure, fatigue, fracture toughness, density, elastic modulus, internal imperfections, surface contamination, cleanliness of powder, and crack propagation.

What terms does EN 4500-003:2026 define?

EN 4500-003:2026 uses the terms and definitions from EN 4259 and EN 4500-001, and several recurring drafting terms are central to the document.

  • Heat-resisting alloy - A metallic material covered by Part 003, used for aerospace applications where the standard must describe its form, condition, and qualification clearly.
  • Delivery condition - The state in which the product is supplied, such as solution treated and precipitation treated, which matters because purchasers need the supplied condition, not only the alloy name.
  • Reference heat treatment - The heat-treatment condition used as the reference for properties and testing, so results are tied to one agreed thermal history.
  • Product qualification - The agreed qualification programme between manufacturer and purchaser, used to show that the product meets the technical specification.
  • Dimensional standard - The standard named in line 5.2 that governs the product dimensions, so the material standard points to the correct dimensional document.
  • Method of melting - The melting route named in the title and Table 1, such as vacuum melted or vacuum arc remelted, which is important because melt route affects material identity and acceptability.
  • Use condition - The condition stated for intended use, which helps link the standard to how the product will actually be supplied or applied.

Who uses EN 4500-003:2026?

EN 4500-003:2026 is used by standards writers and technical committees preparing aerospace material standards, especially within the EN 4500 series. It is also used by aerospace materials engineers, quality managers, laboratories, purchasers, and manufacturers when they draft or check a specification for heat-resisting alloys.

In practice, these users rely on it to decide how to write the title, how to complete Table 1, which test and inspection lines to include, and how to structure qualification requirements. That helps when defining forgings, wrought products, castings, or powder-based products for aerospace supply chains.

What changed in EN 4500-003:2026 from the previous edition?

The foreword states that this edition supersedes EN 4500-003:2024. It also lists these changes compared with that edition:

  • addition of line 4.3, "Further intended processing", and line 5.2, "Dimensional standard", in the body of the document and in Annex D;
  • addition of introductory sentences to Table 1 in Annex C to make clear that the table is a normative element and that all listed documents shall be applied;
  • editorial clarifications on whether references to other documents or annexes are normative or informative;
  • restructuring and simplification of the template to create a single continuous table.

Which standards are used with EN 4500-003:2026?

EN 4500-003:2026 is used together with a set of general, companion, and test standards that support drafting, designation, qualification, and testing.

  • EN 4500-001 - the general rules for drafting and presentation; it is the base document for the series and is used throughout Table 1.
  • EN 4259 - the source of general aerospace metallic-material terms and definitions.
  • EN 10027-1 and EN 10027-2 - designation systems used for material designation in Table 1.
  • EN 4258 - explains the general organization of aerospace metallic-material standardization and the link between standard types.
  • EN 2002-001 - gives the tensile test method at ambient temperature, used in the supporting test lines.
  • EN 2043 - covers general requirements for semi-finished product qualification, outside forgings and castings.
  • EN 2950:2008 and EN 2957 - support micrographic/macrographic examination and preparation of forged samples.
  • EN 6018 and EN ISO 643 - support density measurement and grain size determination.
  • EN 4700-001 to EN 4700-004 - provide technical specifications for wrought products such as plate, sheet and strip, bars and sections, tube, and wire that appear in the examples.

What does the EN 4500-003:2026 document contain?

EN 4500-003:2026 contains the drafting framework for an aerospace material standard and worked examples showing how to complete it. Annex A shows a completed title page, Annex B shows the introduction, Annex C completes the scope, normative references, terms and definitions, and requirements, and Annex D gives a line-by-line example for Table 1.

Annex D is the most practical part for day-to-day use because it shows how the template handles chemical composition, heat treatment, mechanical properties, microstructure, macrostructure, fatigue, fracture toughness, surface condition, cleanliness, density, elastic modulus, and product qualification. Annex E completes the bibliography, so a standards writer can see how the supporting documents are listed.
