General Information
Overview
EN 17873:2023 (CEN) specifies instructions for mounting and fixing factory-made underlays for discontinuous roof coverings and external walls when they are subject to reaction-to-fire testing. It complements product standards for underlays by defining unambiguous test conditions for small-scale ignitability tests (EN ISO 11925-2) and the single burning item (SBI) test (EN 13823). The standard covers exposure side, substrate choices, joint and edge arrangements, product orientation and fixation of test specimens. Note: these procedures are not intended for flat roof waterproofing applications.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope: Applies to flexible sheets for waterproofing used as underlays beneath discontinuous roof coverings (tiles, slates, metal sheets) and behind external wall coverings.
- Test methods: Defines mounting/fixing rules for:
- Ignitability (EN ISO 11925-2) - surface flame attack on the manufacturer-specified outside-facing side; specimens tested in both machine direction (MD) and cross-machine direction (CMD).
- Single Burning Item (EN 13823 / SBI) - flame applied to outside-facing side; mandatory use of a mineral wool substrate for supported installations in SBI tests; special provisions when air gaps or other substrates are involved.
- Substrate rules: Use EN 13238 reference substrates where applicable; specific (non-reference) substrates (e.g., PIR, EPS) are used where representative of end use.
- Installation configurations: Defines free-hanging, ventilated and non-ventilated air gap, and supported installations and how these affect classification testing (e.g., free-hanging required for some class E tests).
- Joints and edges: Specifies joint/overlap arrangements and how integrated seams or external sealing kits are treated during testing. Test results for assemblies are limited to manufacturer literature and must remain separate from CE marking.
- Fixing: Test specimens must be fixed so they do not slip and so the fixing does not influence SBI outcomes.
- Classification linkage: Tests are used to support classification under EN 13501-1.
Applications and Users
- Manufacturers of flexible sheets/underlays preparing reaction-to-fire data and CE marking declarations.
- Independent test laboratories performing EN ISO 11925-2 and SBI testing.
