Overview

EN ISO 19014-3:2018 (ISO 19014-3:2018) specifies minimum environmental performance and test requirements for electronic and electrical components that are identified as safety‑related parts of the control system (SRP/CS) on earth‑moving machinery (EMM) and their attachments (as defined in ISO 6165). Published by CEN from the ISO technical work, this part of the ISO 19014 series focuses on how SRP/CS hardware should withstand real‑world environmental stresses to maintain functional safety.

Key topics and technical requirements

The standard defines required environmental tests and related purposes without prescribing design details. Main technical topics covered include:

  • Functional status classifications (Class A–D) to categorize component safety roles.
  • Environmental tests and requirements, each with stated purpose and test method, including:
    • Dust exposure
    • Chemical resistance
    • Salt spray (corrosion resistance)
    • Pressure wash
    • Random vibration
    • Operating shock
    • Temperature cycles
    • Thermal shock
    • Humidity cycles
    • Overvoltage and undervoltage (reset behaviour)
    • Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
    • Reverse polarity
  • Annex A: an informative test checklist to help plan and document environmental qualification activities.
  • Normative references and terms/definitions to ensure consistent interpretation.

Note: EN ISO 19014-3:2018 provides minimum test requirements and methods; specific test parameters, acceptance criteria and implementation are detailed in the standard text.

Practical applications

This standard is used to ensure that safety‑related electronic/electrical components on earth‑moving machinery remain reliable under environmental stressors commonly encountered on construction and mining sites. Typical applications:

  • Environmental qualification of sensors, controllers, actuators and electronic control units (ECUs) used in SRP/CS.
  • Component selection and validation during product development for excavators, loaders, graders and attachments.
  • Test planning and acceptance checks in laboratory and production test facilities.
  • Supporting risk assessments and functional safety documentation for machinery compliance.

Who should use this standard

  • OEMs and system integrators of earth‑moving machinery
  • Component and module manufacturers (electronic/electrical)
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies performing environmental qualification
  • Safety engineers, R&D teams and quality managers responsible for functional safety of SRP/CS
  • Procurement teams specifying supplier test evidence

Related standards

  • ISO 6165 (definitions for earth‑moving machinery and attachments) - referenced in the scope.
  • Other parts of the ISO 19014 series (functional safety of EMM control systems) and relevant ISO/IEC and EMC standards (for electromagnetic compatibility) - consult normative references in EN ISO 19014-3:2018.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the Introduction and/or
on the ISO list of patent declarations received (see www .iso .org/patents).

expressions related to conformity assessment, as well as information about ISO's adherence to the
World Trade Organization (WTO) principles in the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), see www .iso
.org/iso/foreword .html.
This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 127, Earth-moving machinery,
Subcommittee SC 2, Safety, ergonomics and general requirements.
This first edition of ISO 19014-3, together with ISO 19014-1, ISO 19014-2, ISO 19014-4 and ISO/
TS 19014-5, cancels and replaces ISO 15998, which has been technically revised.
The main changes compared to the previous document are as follows:
— details added to existing test requirements;
— additional electrical and environmental tests.
A list of all parts in the ISO 19014-series can be found on the ISO website. At the time of publication of
this document, Part 2, Design and evaluation of safety-related machine control systems, Part 4, Design and
evaluation of software and transmission for safety related parts of the control system, and Part 5, Tables of
performance levels, are under development.
Any feedback or questions on this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A
complete listing of these bodies can be found at www .iso .org/members .html.
