General Information
Overview
CEN/TS 16819:2015 - "Postal services - Parcel boxes for end use - Technical features" is a European Technical Specification that defines the technical features, classifications and test methods for parcel boxes intended to receive parcels delivered by postal and parcel operators. The document covers parcel box dimensions, ergonomics and safety, corrosion and water resistance, and security of delivery, and includes Annexes with dimensional data, installation guidance and tests.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and classification
- Parcel box types: dedicated or shared; limited or not limited to a single delivery at a time.
- Eight parcel sizes are defined (maximum dimensions given in Annex A).
- Dimensions and gauge parcels
- Boxes must accommodate the maximum parcel sizes in Annex A.
- Gauge parcels are used to verify delivery clearance and emptying without damage.
- Ergonomics and accessibility
- Installation instructions are required; non-conformance results from incorrect installation.
- Where more than four boxes are grouped, at least 30% must have opening devices (locks/handles) installed between 900 mm and 1 300 mm for accessibility.
- Safety and child protection
- Components reachable during use must not have sharp edges.
- For large boxes (size XL or larger), child entrapment measures are required: emergency opening from the inside, maximum opening force specified (≤ 8 N), ventilation/opening provisions, and warning labels for parents.
- Corrosion and water penetration
- Corrosion resistance is classified against EN 1670 (three grades identified in the specification).
- Water penetration and IP-type protection considerations are included.
- Security
- Six security grades are defined for door, lock and casing performance.
- Requirements cover locking mechanisms (mechanical/electronic), fixings, casing strength and alternative door systems.
- Testing
- Test methods are detailed in Clause 6 and corresponding informative/ normative annexes (including ventilation and security tests).
