Workplace exposure - Assessment of sampler performance for measurement of airborne particle concentrations - Part 6: Transport and handling tests
This European Standard specifies a performance test of loaded collection substrates for samplers for the inhalable, thoracic or respirable aerosol fractions and, as alternative, a handling test, both for testing transport losses of aerosol sampler substrates under prescribed conditions in order to calculate the expanded uncertainty of a measuring procedure according to EN 13205 1:2012, Annex A . The transport test involves shipping loaded substrates with ordinary mail, whereas the handling test uses a shaker.
This part of EN 13205 applies to all samplers used for the health-related sampling of particles in workplace air.

Overview - EN 13205-6:2014 (Transport & handling tests for aerosol samplers)
EN 13205-6:2014, published by CEN, is part of the EN 13205 series for workplace exposure assessment. This part specifies performance tests to quantify transport and handling losses from loaded collection substrates used with samplers for the inhalable, thoracic and respirable aerosol fractions. Two complementary methods are defined: a transport test (shipping loaded substrates by ordinary mail) and a handling test (exposing loaded substrates to vibration using a shaker). Results are used to calculate the expanded uncertainty of a measuring procedure in accordance with EN 13205-1:2014, Annex A.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: applies to all samplers used for health-related sampling of particles in workplace air (inhalable, thoracic, respirable fractions).
- Two test methods:
- Transport test - loading substrates with aerosol, shipping via ordinary mail, and weighing before/after to determine mass loss.
- Handling test - loading substrates with a specified aerosol and exposing them to controlled vibration (shaker) to simulate handling losses.
- Measurement and calculation:
- Determination of mass losses, standard deviations and average relative losses for subsets of samples.
- Use of test data to estimate random and non‑random measurement errors due to transport/handling and to calculate the expanded uncertainty contribution.
- Test reporting: requires documented test laboratory details, sampler and substrate description, test equipment, procedures, results and summary (as specified in clauses for transport and handling tests).
- Terminology and symbols align with EN 1540, EN 13205‑1 and EN 13205‑2; uncertainty control references include ISO 15767.
Practical applications - who uses EN 13205-6:2014
- Sampler manufacturers - to validate and declare sampler performance including transport/handling uncertainty for product data sheets.
- Testing laboratories and calibration facilities - to perform standardized transport/handling tests and produce compliant test reports.
- Occupational hygienists and employers - to understand and include transport/handling uncertainty in workplace exposure assessments.
- Regulators and accreditation bodies - to evaluate conformity of sampler performance claims and measurement uncertainty estimates.

1) The inhalable convention is undefined for particle sizes in excess of 100 µm or for wind speeds greater than 4 m/s. The tests required to assess performance are therefore limited to these conditions. Should such large particle sizes or wind speeds actually exist at the time of sampling, it is possible that different samplers meeting this standard give different results. SIST EN 13205-6:2014

The article discusses EN 13205-6:2014, a European Standard that outlines a test for the performance of samplers used to measure airborne particle concentrations in the workplace. The test examines the transport and handling of loaded collection substrates to determine any potential losses. This test is essential for calculating the expanded uncertainty of a measuring procedure. The transport test involves shipping loaded substrates through ordinary mail, while the handling test includes the use of a shaker. This standard applies to all samplers used for health-related particle sampling in workplace air.
