Overview

EN ISO 21787:2006/A1:2019 - Industrial valves: Globe valves of thermoplastics materials (Amendment 1) is a CEN-endorsed amendment to ISO 21787:2006. It updates the original standard’s scope, referenced documents, test and design requirements, and permissable material and pressure/size ranges for globe (stop) valves made from thermoplastic materials. The amendment also includes an informative Annex ZA linking the standard to Directive 2014/68/EU (Pressure Equipment Directive).

Key Topics

  • Scope and ratings
    • Declared nominal diameters (DN): DN 10 to DN 350 (specific list in the amendment).
    • Declared pressure ratings: PN 6, PN 10, PN 16, and Class 150. (Note: manufacturers may declare different DN/PN.)
  • Permitted materials
    • Body/bonnet materials: ABS, PE, PP, PVC‑C, PVC‑U, PVDF, referenced to the applicable ISO material standards (e.g., ISO 15493, ISO 15494, ISO 10931).
  • Design and strength
    • Design strength demonstrated by body pressure tests and long‑term behaviour tests in compliance with ISO 9393‑2.
    • Temperature-dependent rating factors (f) for different thermoplastics are specified to support lifetime up to 25 years.
  • Testing and leaktightness
    • Seat and packing/shell leaktightness verified on complete valves per ISO 9393‑2.
    • Flow resistance, pressure tests and acceptance criteria reference updated EN/ISO test standards (e.g., EN 12266‑1, EN 1267).
  • Dimensions and interfaces
    • Face‑to‑face dimensions for flanged valves follow EN 558; other end connections are the manufacturer’s responsibility.
    • Thread and flange references updated (e.g., ISO 7‑1, EN 1092‑1).
  • Operation
    • Permissible manual operating forces and actuator attachment guidance reference EN 12570 and ISO 5210.

Applications

  • Who uses it
    • Valve manufacturers, product designers and material engineers specifying thermoplastic globe valves.
    • Plant engineers, procurement and maintenance teams in chemical, water treatment, and process industries seeking compliant valve selection.
    • Testing laboratories and conformity assessors verifying performance, leaktightness and pressure capability.
    • Regulatory bodies and conformity agents applying the Pressure Equipment Directive (2014/68/EU) where referenced.
  • Practical value
    • Ensures consistent material selection, pressure/temperature rating and test methods for reliable, long‑term performance of thermoplastic globe valves.
    • Helps manufacturers declare DN/PN, meet EU essential requirements and provide traceability and operating instructions.

Related Standards (selected)

  • ISO 21787:2006 (base standard)

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the Introduction and/or
on the ISO list of patent declarations received (see www .iso .org/patents).
Any trade name used in this document is information given for the convenience of users and does not
constitute an endorsement.
For an explanation of the voluntary nature of standards, the meaning of ISO specific terms and
expressions related to conformity assessment, as well as information about ISO's adherence to
the World Trade Organization (WTO) principles in the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), see
