Protective clothing - Protection against flame - Limited flame spread materials, material assemblies and clothing (ISO 14116:2015)

ISO 14116:2015 specifies the performance requirements for the limited flame spread properties of all materials, all material assemblies, and protective clothing in order to reduce the possibility of the clothing burning when in occasional and brief contact with small flames and thereby constituting a hazard. Additional requirements for clothing are also specified, including design requirements, mechanical requirements, marking, and information supplied by the manufacturer.
When protection against heat hazards is necessary, in addition to protection against flame, this International Standard is not appropriate. International Standards such as ISO 11612 are to be used instead.
A classification system is given for materials, material assemblies, and garments which are tested according to ISO 15025, Procedure A.

L'ISO 14116:2015 spécifie les exigences de performance relatives aux matériaux, aux assemblages de matériaux et aux vêtements de protection à propagation de flamme limitée afin de réduire le risque qu'un vêtement brûle lors d'un contact occasionnel et de courte durée avec de petites flammes, constituant ainsi par lui-même un danger. D'autres exigences s'appliquant aux vêtements sont également spécifiées, notamment des exigences de conception, des exigences mécaniques, ainsi que des exigences relatives au marquage et à la notice d'information du fabricant.

Ta mednarodni standard določa zahteve za lastnosti omejene stopnje gorljivosti vseh materialov, vseh kombinacij materialov in varovalne obleke, s čemer se zmanjša možnost vnetljivosti oblačil, če pridejo v priložnostni in kratek stik z manjšimi plameni in s tem povzročeno nevarnostjo. Opredeljene so tudi dodatne zahteve za oblačila, vključno z zahtevami oblikovanja, mehanskimi zahtevami, označevanjem in informacijami, ki jih zagotovi proizvajalec. Ta standard se ne uporablja v primerih, ko je poleg zaščite pred plameni potrebna tudi zaščita pred toploto. V takih primerih se uporabljajo drugi standardi, na primer ISO 11612. This document (EN ISO 14116:2015) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 94 "Personal safety
- Protective clothing and equipment" in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 162 “Protective
clothing including hand and arm protection and lifejackets” the secretariat of which is held by DIN
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical
text or by endorsement, at the latest by January 2016, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at
the latest by January 2016.

Relationship between this European Standard and the Essential
Requirements of EU Directive 89/686/EEC
This European Standard has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission
and the European Free Trade Association to provide one means of conforming to Essential Requirements of
the New Approach Directive 89/686/EEC on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to
personal protective equipment.
Once this standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union under that Directive and has been
implemented as a national standard in at least one Member State, compliance with the normative clauses of
this International Standard given in Table ZA.1 confers, within the limits of the scope of this International
Standard, a presumption of conformity with the corresponding Essential Requirements of that Directive and
associated EFTA regulations.

Introduction
The purpose of this International Standard is to provide minimum performance requirements for
clothing in order to reduce the possibility of the clothing and/or its materials burning when in occasional
and brief contact with small flames and thereby, itself constituting a hazard.
For complete protection against exposure to flame, it will be necessary to protect the head, face, hands,
and/or feet with suitable PPE and, in some cases, appropriate respiratory protection might also be
considered necessary.

Attention is drawn to ISO/TR 2801:2007, which sets out guidelines for selection, use, care, and
maintenance of protective clothing against flame.
Nothing in this International Standard is intended to restrict any jurisdiction, purchaser, or manufacturer
from exceeding these minimum requirements.

1 Scope
This International Standard specifies the performance requirements for the limited flame spread
properties of all materials, all material assemblies, and protective clothing in order to reduce the
