Compressors and vacuum pumps - Safety requirements - Part 2: Vacuum pumps

This standard is applicable to all vacuum pumps, vacuum pump combinations and vacuum pumping systems. The standard lists the significant hazards associated with vacuum pumps and specifies safety requirements applicable to the design, installation, operation, maintenance and dismantling of vacuum pumps during their foreseeable life and subsequent disposal.
The scope does not include pumps designed to pump continuously on open systems where the pump inlet pressure is above 75 kPA (750 mbar) absolute, i.e. vacuum cleaners, ventilation fans).
Vacuum pumps intended for use in special applications shall also comply with any specific standards relating to those applications.

Overview

EN 1012-2:1996/prA1 is a European safety standard developed by CEN that focuses on vacuum pumps, their combinations, and vacuum pumping systems. This document defines the safety requirements to address significant hazards throughout the entire lifecycle of vacuum pumps - encompassing design, installation, operation, maintenance, dismantling, and disposal. It does not cover pumps used continuously in open systems at inlet pressures above 75 kPa absolute, such as vacuum cleaners or ventilation fans. Additionally, vacuum pumps intended for specialized applications must comply with other relevant standards applicable to those specific uses.

This standard serves as a type C standard under EN ISO 12100, placing priority on its safety provisions over more general type A or B standards when conflicting requirements arise. EN 1012-2:1996/prA1 supports compliance with essential European directives, including Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and former Directive 98/37/EC.

Key Topics

  • Safety Requirements: Defines mandatory protective measures covering mechanical, electrical, and operational hazards related to vacuum pumps.
  • Markings and Identification: Requires clear, legible, and indelible markings on vacuum pumps, including manufacturer details, designation, serial number, year of construction, and any mandatory CE marking.
  • Noise Emission Standards: Specifies requirements for noise emission data to be included in operator instructions. This includes A-weighted sound pressure levels at workstations, peak C-weighted sound pressure values, and sound power levels when thresholds exceed defined limits.
  • Spare Parts Specifications: Addresses safety implications of spare parts, mandating that information on specifications must be provided when these parts affect operator health or safety.
  • Lifecycle Safety Management: Covers safety during installation, operation, maintenance, dismantling, and disposal phases to ensure hazards are minimized throughout a pump’s service life.
  • Conformity and Compliance: Establishes relationships with applicable EU directives and mandates presumption of conformity when requirements of this standard are met.

Applications

EN 1012-2:1996/prA1 is essential for manufacturers, installers, and users of vacuum pumps in industries such as:

  • Industrial manufacturing and processing
  • Chemical and pharmaceutical production
  • Food and beverage packaging
  • Semiconductor and electronics fabrication
  • Laboratory and research environments

By adhering to this standard, organizations can:

  • Ensure vacuum pumps operate safely, reducing risk of accidents or equipment failure
  • Facilitate regulatory compliance to access European markets
  • Enhance operator safety through clear documentation and labelling
  • Improve machine lifecycle management, reducing downtime and maintenance risks
  • Control environmental and occupational noise levels

Related Standards

To provide a comprehensive safety framework, EN 1012-2:1996/prA1 references and integrates requirements with other standards, including:

  • EN ISO 12100-2:2003: Safety of machinery - Basic concepts and technical principles for design
  • EN 1010-1: Safety of machinery - Electrical equipment of machines (replacing EN 1010-7)
  • ISO 4871: Declaration and verification of noise emission values for machinery
  • Other CEN standards addressing compressors and pneumatic machines under CEN/TC 232

Additionally, vacuum pumps used in special applications must also comply with application-specific standards to cover unique hazards and performance criteria.
