Overview
EN ISO 20643:2008/A1:2012 is a crucial European and international standard focused on evaluating mechanical vibration emissions from hand-held and hand-guided machinery. This amendment (Amendment 1) specifically updates the principles for measuring vibration by refining the accelerometer positions used during testing. Originally based on ISO 20643:2005, this 2012 amendment optimizes measurement locations to enhance accuracy and consistency in vibration emission assessments.
Produced by CEN in collaboration with ISO Technical Committees, the standard aligns with EU Directive 2006/42/EC on machinery safety requirements, ensuring manufacturers and safety regulators adhere to harmonized vibration measurement protocols. With a key focus on hand-transmitted vibration, the standard supports improved user safety and compliance across Europe and worldwide.
Key Topics
Vibration Measurement Principles
Defines standardized methods for measuring vibration magnitudes using triaxial accelerometers. Measurements capture frequency-weighted acceleration values (m/s²) along x, y, and z axes relative to hand grip positions.Accelerometer Positions
Specifies precise locations on the machine handles or grips where accelerometers are mounted. Key positions include:- "Hand-grip" position where the hand grips a cylindrical handle
- "Flat palm" position pressing down on spherical grips
The accelerometer must be rigidly mounted close to the grip surface to avoid altering tool vibration or operator grip behavior.
Measurement Conditions
Emphasizes testing with skilled operators to reflect real-world tool handling. Measurements should typically be simultaneous on dual handles, if present. Detailed working procedures must simulate typical tasks to enable reproducibility.Instrumentation Requirements
Mandates compliance with ISO 8041 for vibration measurement instrumentation, ensuring transducers are sensitive and light enough to avoid measurement distortion. Proper mounting techniques and filtering methods are discussed to address impulsive vibration typical in pneumatic tools.Combination of Vibration Directions
Introduces mathematical methods to calculate total vibration magnitude by combining frequency-weighted RMS acceleration values from multiple measurement axes.
Applications
This standard is widely applied in industries where vibration exposure from hand-held machinery poses health risks, including:
Power Tool Manufacturing
Providing guidelines to assess and limit vibration emissions for tools like drills, chipping hammers, grinders, and saws, thus helping manufacturers design safer and ergonomic equipment.Occupational Health and Safety
Enabling regulators and employers to evaluate vibration exposure levels under realistic operating conditions to prevent vibration-induced injuries such as Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS).Testing Laboratories
Facilitating consistent test protocols and reporting standards to ensure reliable vibration emission data across different products and manufacturers.Machine Safety Compliance
Supporting manufacturers to fulfill essential requirements of EU machinery safety directives for market access within the European Economic Area.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International
Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
