Testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products - Part 6: Low temperature tensile test

This document specifies the dimensions, the method of sampling and the preparation of the test specimens, also the conditions for performing the low temperature tensile test perpendicular to the weld in order to determine the low temperature tensile welding factor.
A low temperature tensile test can be used in conjunction with other tests (e.g. bend, tensile creep, macro) to assess the performance of welded assemblies, made from thermoplastics materials.
The low temperature tensile welding factor and the appearance of the fracture surface provide a guide regarding the ductility of the joint and the quality of the work.
This document is applicable to co-axial or co-planar welded assemblies made from thermoplastics materials filled or unfilled, but not reinforced, irrespective of the welding process used.
This document does not apply to co-axial welded assemblies of an external diameter less than 20 mm.

Overview

FprEN 12814-6 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the procedures for low temperature tensile testing on welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products. The document defines the dimensions, sampling methods, specimen preparation, and test conditions for evaluating the properties of welds perpendicular to the joint. The primary objective is to determine the low temperature tensile welding factor, which provides an indication of the strength and ductility of a welded assembly under low temperature conditions. This critical test can be combined with other methods such as bend and tensile creep tests to comprehensively assess weld performance, particularly in demanding environments.

Key Topics

  • Test Specimen Preparation: Clear specifications for cutting and marking both welded and unwelded specimens from semi-finished thermoplastics, ensuring meaningful comparison.
  • Test Parameters: Conditions for performing the tensile test at low temperature, including considerations for temperature stability and test speed.
  • Applicability: Suitable for co-axial or co-planar welded assemblies, whether filled or unfilled, and regardless of the welding technique used. The test does not apply to assemblies with an external diameter below 20 mm.
  • Welding Factor Evaluation: Guidelines for calculating the low temperature tensile welding factor based on stress values from welded and unwelded specimens.
  • Fracture Surface Analysis: The appearance and type of the fracture is used to assess ductility and weld quality, which are critical for ensuring reliability in service.
  • Comprehensive Reporting: Requirements for documenting test conditions, specimen details, and results, providing traceability and facilitating quality control.

Applications

The procedures outlined in FprEN 12814-6 are widely applicable in industries that use welded thermoplastics for piping systems, structural components, and assemblies where performance in low temperature environments is essential. Practical applications include:

  • Quality Assurance of Welded Joints: Enables manufacturers and inspectors to assess weld integrity and performance, ensuring compliance with industry requirements.
  • Weld Procedure Qualification: Supports validation of welding procedures by providing standardized testing conditions and acceptance criteria.
  • Material and Weld Selection: Assists engineers in selecting appropriate materials and welding methods for low temperature service, reducing failure risk.
  • Performance Benchmarking: Facilitates comparison between different products or fabrication techniques, helping in product development and competitive analysis.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Meets requirements for third-party certification, customer specifications, and harmonized construction product regulations.

Related Standards

For a comprehensive approach to testing and validating welded thermoplastics, the following standards are relevant:

  • EN 13100-1 - Non-destructive testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products - Part 1: Visual examination.
  • EN ISO 291 - Plastics - Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing.
  • ISO 5893 - Test equipment for rubber and plastics - Specification for tensile, flexural, and compression tests.
  • EN 12814 Series - Covers additional testing methods such as bend, tensile creep, and macro analysis for a complete assessment of welded thermoplastics joints.

By following FprEN 12814-6, organizations can enhance reliability, safety, and quality in thermoplastics welding applications, particularly when performance at low temperatures is a critical design consideration.
