Structural steel equal and unequal leg angles - Part 2: Tolerances on shape and dimensions
This part of this European standard specifies tolerances on shape dimensions and mass of hot-rolled structural steel equal and unequal leg angles. The sizes of these angles are given in EN 10056-1. These tolerances do not apply to equal and unequal leg angles produced from stainless steel. Note: until EN 10056-1 is published, either Euronorms 56 and 57 or the corresponding national standards may be used.

Overview
EN 10056-2:1993 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies tolerances on shape, dimensions, and mass for hot-rolled structural steel equal and unequal leg angles. This standard focuses on ensuring consistent quality and dimensional accuracy in steel angles used in construction and structural engineering. It complements EN 10056-1, which defines the sizes of these steel angles. However, EN 10056-2:1993 explicitly excludes stainless steel angles from its scope.
This standard helps manufacturers, engineers, and quality controllers maintain precise geometric standards for steel profiles, ensuring interoperability and reliability within the European steel construction market.
Key Topics
- Shape tolerances: Defines permissible deviations in the form of equal and unequal leg angles to maintain structural integrity and fit.
- Dimensional tolerances: Specifies limits for length, leg size, thickness, and other critical dimensions to guarantee consistency.
- Mass tolerances: Establishes acceptable mass variations for steel angles, supporting accurate weight calculations for structural design.
- Material scope: Applies exclusively to hot-rolled structural steel angles; stainless steel equivalents are excluded.
- Reference to EN 10056-1: Uses size standards from this complementary part; until EN 10056-1 publication, Euronorms 56 and 57 or national standards are recommended.
Applications
EN 10056-2:1993 is essential across multiple sectors involving structural steel components:
- Construction: Ensures steel angles used in buildings, bridges, and infrastructure meet strict shape and size requirements for safety and performance.
- Structural engineering: Facilitates precise steel profile manufacturing essential for load-bearing elements, supporting design accuracy.
- Manufacturing and fabrication: Guides steel producers in adherence to tight tolerances, improving product consistency and reducing waste.
- Quality assurance: Assists inspection teams in verifying steel angle conformity to predefined dimensional and shape limits, enhancing trust in material supply.
- Material sourcing: Supports procurement decisions by defining exact tolerance ranges for steel profiles, ensuring compatibility with design specifications.
Related Standards
- EN 10056-1: Defines the nominal sizes of equal and unequal leg steel angles; used alongside EN 10056-2 for complete specification.
- Euronorms 56 and 57: Earlier steel angle standards referenced until EN 10056-1 is fully published and adopted.
- National standards: Various European countries' steel profile standards serve as temporary references for sizing and tolerances.
- EN 10025: Covers hot-rolled structural steel products and may be relevant for steel grades used in angle profiles.
- EN 10088: Pertains to stainless steel product specifications but is excluded from EN 10056-2’s scope.
By adhering to EN 10056-2:1993, steel fabricators, engineers, and contractors ensure high-quality, dimensionally precise structural steel angles that meet European market standards-critical for reliable, safe, and economically efficient steel construction projects.
