Overview
EN 60335-2-36:2002/A2:2008 (CENELEC; aligned with IEC 60335-2-36:2002/A2:2008) is the European amendment that updates Part 2‑36 of the IEC 60335 series. It sets safety requirements for commercial electric cooking ranges, ovens, hobs and hob elements used in professional or collective catering. Amendment A2 (approved March 2008) clarifies appliance classification, abnormal‑operation tests, construction (thermal cut‑outs) and marking/instructions while reinforcing that Part 1 of IEC 60335 applies where Part 2 has no additional requirements.
Key topics and requirements
Scope and status
- Part of the IEC 60335 family of household and similar electrical appliances safety standards; A2 is an amendment to EN 60335-2-36:2002.
- Harmonized across CENELEC members; national implementation dates specified.
Classification and ingress protection
- Appliances normally used on a table: minimum IPX3.
- Other appliances: minimum IPX4.
Abnormal operation and fault simulation
- Addition (19.11.2): during fault simulations it must be possible to switch off any energized hob element.
- Faults are also simulated with all hob elements switched off and with rated supply; if a pan detector is used, a suitable vessel is placed on the zone.
- Hob elements shall not become energized during these simulations.
Construction - thermal cut‑outs
- For three‑phase appliances: thermal cut‑outs protecting heating circuits (except hob elements) and motors whose unexpected start is hazardous must be non‑self‑resetting, trip‑free and provide all‑pole disconnection.
- For single‑phase appliances/elements: such cut‑outs must be non‑self‑resetting, trip‑free and provide at least one‑pole disconnection (with an exception if non‑self‑resetting device is only accessible after removal of parts with a tool).
- Bulb and capillary type cut‑outs must tolerate capillary rupture without impairing compliance; compliance checked by inspection, manual test and capillary rupture.
Marking and instructions
- Modification excludes a particular instruction about persons with reduced capabilities (i.e., that specific instruction is not applicable).
Applications and who uses it
- Manufacturers and designers of commercial electric ranges, ovens, hobs and hob elements use this standard to design compliant products.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies apply the requirements for type testing and certification.
- Procurement teams, safety engineers, catering equipment installers and regulators reference EN 60335-2-36 for product safety, market access and procurement specifications.
Related standards
- IEC 60335-1 (Part 1 general requirements) - applies where Part 2 has no added requirements.
- ISO 13732-1 (ergonomics - hot surfaces) is noted in the bibliography and considered in temperature/surface hazard assessments.
Keywords: EN 60335-2-36, IEC 60335-2-36, commercial electric cooking ranges, ovens, hobs, safety standard, thermal cut‑outs, IPX3, IPX4, hob elements, pan detector, CENELEC.
