Overview

EN 60335-2-9:2003/A2:2006 is the CENELEC-adopted amendment (A2) to the household appliance safety standard for grills, toasters and similar portable cooking appliances (IEC 60335-2-9). Approved 2006-04-01, this amendment updates particular safety requirements and testing/marking provisions for portable cooking equipment. The extract does not include a full scope text, but the title and clauses show the amendment focuses on surface temperatures, marking, instructions and specific test methods (notably for toasters).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Temperature-rise limits: Accessible metal surfaces (other than working surfaces) that exceed a 90 K temperature rise in Clause 11 tests must be identified and marked.
  • Toaster testing (11.101): Top-loading toasters are operated for three cycles at rated power; metallic side surfaces less than 25 mm below the top must not exceed a 90 K rise. (No limits specified for other surfaces in this clause.)
  • Marking for hot surfaces: Appliances with hot accessible metal surfaces must carry symbol IEC 60417-5041 (hot surface symbol) or the wording “CAUTION: Hot surface.” The triangle height used with the symbol must be at least 12 mm, and the marking must be visible in normal operation.
  • Instructions: Manuals must warn that surfaces may be hot, state that appliances are not intended for use with external timers/remote controls, and include cleaning instructions (e.g., breadcrumb removal for toasters).
  • Normative references and definitions: Amendment adds ISO 3864-1 (safety sign design principles), refines definitions (e.g., “radiant grills and rotary grills”), and adjusts several clause texts.
  • Country-specific differences: The amendment documents a number of national deviations (USA, Canada, Norway), indicating alternate test methods, limits or exemptions may apply in some jurisdictions.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Manufacturers of grills, toasters and portable cooking appliances - for design, safety compliance and labelling.
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies - to perform required temperature-rise, fire-resistance and operational tests (including the toaster cycle test).
  • Compliance engineers, product safety officers and regulatory authorities - to verify CE/CENELEC compliance and prepare instructions/markings.
  • Technical writers and packaging teams - to implement required warnings, symbols and user-instructions.

Related standards and references

  • IEC 60335-2-9:2002/A2:2006 (base international text)
  • ISO 3864-1 - Graphical symbols: safety colours and safety signs
  • IEC 60417-5041 - Hot surface warning symbol

This amendment tightens safety labelling and testing for portable cooking appliances. Use EN 60335-2-9:2003/A2:2006 when evaluating product surface temperatures, marking requirements and toaster-specific endurance tests to ensure safe consumer products and regulatory compliance.
