Overview

EN 60335-2-58:2005/A2:2015 is a CENELEC amendment to the safety standard for commercial electric dishwashing machines (based on IEC 60335-2-58). Published as an amendment (A2) in 2015, it updates particular safety requirements for design, construction, testing and operation of dishwashers intended for collective/commercial use and supports conformity with European directives.

Key topics and technical requirements

• Scope and normative references: Updates references to key standards used in testing and materials assessment - notably IEC 60436 (performance methods), IEC 61770:2008 (avoidance of backsiphonage) and ISO 1817:2011 (rubber testing).
• Programmable electronic controls: New requirements (Clause 22.109) ensure that appliances with programmable electronic circuits remain safe if all heaters and motors were to be energised simultaneously; compliance may be checked by fault tests or by forced simultaneous activation under rated supply.
• Internal wiring and durability: Flexing tests for conductors expected to be flexed in normal use increased to 100,000 cycles; certain tests may be carried out with the appliance disconnected.
• Elastomer ageing (Annex BB): Revised ageing test for rubber/plastics used in seals and hoses - immersion at 75 °C, 48 h exposure, post-immersion conditioning and limits on mass increase (≤10%) and hardness change (≤8 IRHD). Surfaces must not become sticky or show visible cracks.
• Detergent and rinsing agent procedures (Annex AA): Specifies use and storage of test detergents and rinsing agents (from IEC 60436) and guidance on commercially available products for performance testing.
• Backsiphonage prevention (Annex CC): Applies to connection to water mains ≤1 MPa; requires hose-sets delivered with the appliance (unless specified), construction to reduce flooding risk, and tests/arrangements for dynamic backflow preventers. For batch dishwashers, the branching point for upper/lower inlets must be at least 40 mm above maximum water level and test arrangements are defined.
