Guidelines for the use of EN 45545-2 for Ni-Cd batteries on board rolling stock

The scope of this document is to guide users of the EN 45545 series, particularly EN 45545 2:2013+A1:2015 and EN 45545 5:2013+A1:2015, in the application of these standards in designing and assessing NiCd batteries on board trains for their fire protection measures. The scope of this document excludes any new requirements, considering only the requirements stated by the above listed standards. However, EN 45545 being generic requirements and not specifically referring to NiCd batteries, this guide helps the application for those batteries.

This European Standard gives guidance in the safe use of rolling stock cables specified in EN 50264, EN 50306 and EN 50382.These cables shall only be used for the wiring of railway rolling stock and within the limits given in the manner described in this European Standard. All these cables are for fixed installation where there is no free movement of cable, except for stresses due to typical service. This European Standard is to be applied in conjunction with the relevant product and installation standards. Stricter requirements than those given in this standard could be necessary; see in particular EN 50343. This European Standard is not applicable to: – intercarriage jumpers; – cables subject to continual flexing; – pantograph cables; – coaxial, data and fibre optic cables; – wire wrap; – cables rated at voltages greater than 3,6/6 kV; – applications other than the cabling of railway rolling stock; – cables requiring circuit integrity. Legal or statutory requirements do take precedence over the guidance given in this document. In cases where no guidance exists or where it cannot be derived from general information, it is recommended that advice shall be sought from the cable manufacturer.

They are for use in railway rolling stock as fixed wiring, or wiring where limited flexing in operation is encountered. The requirements provide for a continuous conductor temperature not exceeding 90 C and a maximum temperature for short circuit conditions of 200 C based on a duration of 5 s. Under fire conditions the cables exhibit special performance characteristics in respect of maximum permissible flame propagation (flame spread) and maximum permissible emission of smoke and toxic gases. EN 50264-3-2 should be read in conjunction with Part 1 “General requirements”.

EN 50264-1 specifies the general requirements applicable to the cables given in all other parts of EN 50264. It includes the detailed requirements for the insulating and sheathing materials and other components called up in the separate parts. In particular EN 50264-1 specifies those requirements relating to fire safety. Based on proven experience and reliability over many years these cables are rated for occasional thermal stresses causing ageing equivalent to continuous operational life at a conductor temperature of 90 °C. NOTE This rating is based upon the polymers defined in 3.1 and 3.2. Before these polymers had gained widespread acceptance in the cable industry, ageing performance had been assessed via long-term thermal endurance testing and had been extrapolated to 20 000 h using techniques equivalent to those in EN 60216 (series). Subsequent experience in service has demonstrated that the predicted performance levels were correct. Where extrapolated data is used to predict lifetime in service it should be confirmed with the cable manufacturer, and should be on the basis of a failure mode appropriate to the type of material or cable. The maximum conductor temperature for short circuit conditions is 200 °C based on a duration of 5 s. This Part 1 should be read in conjunction with the other parts of EN 50264.

IEC 63305:2024 specifies methods and procedures for calibration of vector receivers in the frequency range 5 Hz to 10 kHz, which are applicable to vector receivers based on the two different principles. In addition, it describes an absolute method of inertial vector receiver calibration in air using optical interferometry. Usually, acoustic wave vector receivers are designed and constructed based on one of two principles. One is the sound pressure difference (gradient) principle. When measuring with this sensor, the vector receiver is rigidly fixed on a mount and supported in water. The other is the co-vibrating (inertial) principle. When measuring with this sensor, the vector receiver is suspended on a mount and supported in water in a non-rigid manner, which allows the vector receiver co-vibrate in the same direction as the sound particle in the sound wave field. Many methods have been used to calibrate vector receivers, such as free-field calibration, calibration in standing wave tube and calibration in a travelling wave tube.
