Railway applications - Railway rolling stock cables having special fire performance - Test methods

This document specifies special test methods applicable to cables, and their constituent insulating and sheathing materials, for use in railway rolling stock. Such cables are specified in the various parts of the EN 50264 series, EN 50306 series and EN 50382 series. Other test methods required for railway rolling stock cables and their insulating and sheathing materials are listed in Annex A.

For standard cables this is determined by the acceptance test defined in EN 50305, using accelerated long-term (5 000 h) thermal ageing indicating a 110 °C/20 000 h temperature index. If the customer were to require lifetime predictions this would be demonstrated based on the temperature index of the product as supplied by the manufacturer. The maximum temperature for short circuit conditions is 160 °C based on duration of 5 s. Under fire conditions the cables exhibit special performance characteristics in respect of maximum permissible flame propagation (flame spread) and maximum permissible emission of smoke and toxic gases. These requirements are specified to permit the cables to satisfy Hazard Level 3 of EN 45545 1 and EN 45545 2. EN 50306 4:2020 is expected to be used in conjunction with EN 50306-1:2020, General requirements, EN 50306-2:2020, Single core cables, and EN 50306-3:2020, Single core and multicore cables.

It includes the detailed requirements for S2 sheathing materials and other components called up in the separate parts. NOTE Detailed requirements for insulation systems are given in EN 50306-2. In particular, EN 50306-1 specifies those requirements relating to fire safety which enable the cables to satisfy Hazard Level 3 of EN 45545-1 and EN 45545-2. These cables are rated for occasional thermal stresses which causes ageing equivalent to continuous operational life at a temperature of 105 °C or 90 °C. For standard cables, this is determined by the acceptance test defined in EN 50305, using accelerated long-term (5 000 h) thermal ageing indicating a 125 °C or 110 °C /20 000 h temperature index. If the customer were to require lifetime predictions, this would be demonstrated based on the temperature index of the product as supplied by the manufacturer. The maximum temperature for short circuit conditions is 160 °C based on duration of 5 s. EN 50306-1 is expected to be used in conjunction with one or more of the other parts of EN 50306.

This European Standard gives guidance in the safe use of rolling stock cables specified in EN 50264, EN 50306 and EN 50382.These cables shall only be used for the wiring of railway rolling stock and within the limits given in the manner described in this European Standard. All these cables are for fixed installation where there is no free movement of cable, except for stresses due to typical service. This European Standard is to be applied in conjunction with the relevant product and installation standards. Stricter requirements than those given in this standard could be necessary; see in particular EN 50343. This European Standard is not applicable to: – intercarriage jumpers; – cables subject to continual flexing; – pantograph cables; – coaxial, data and fibre optic cables; – wire wrap; – cables rated at voltages greater than 3,6/6 kV; – applications other than the cabling of railway rolling stock; – cables requiring circuit integrity. Legal or statutory requirements do take precedence over the guidance given in this document. In cases where no guidance exists or where it cannot be derived from general information, it is recommended that advice shall be sought from the cable manufacturer.

EN 50264-1 specifies the general requirements applicable to the cables given in all other parts of EN 50264. It includes the detailed requirements for the insulating and sheathing materials and other components called up in the separate parts. In particular EN 50264-1 specifies those requirements relating to fire safety. Based on proven experience and reliability over many years these cables are rated for occasional thermal stresses causing ageing equivalent to continuous operational life at a conductor temperature of 90 °C. NOTE This rating is based upon the polymers defined in 3.1 and 3.2. Before these polymers had gained widespread acceptance in the cable industry, ageing performance had been assessed via long-term thermal endurance testing and had been extrapolated to 20 000 h using techniques equivalent to those in EN 60216 (series). Subsequent experience in service has demonstrated that the predicted performance levels were correct. Where extrapolated data is used to predict lifetime in service it should be confirmed with the cable manufacturer, and should be on the basis of a failure mode appropriate to the type of material or cable. The maximum conductor temperature for short circuit conditions is 200 °C based on a duration of 5 s. This Part 1 should be read in conjunction with the other parts of EN 50264.
