Overview

EN 50163:2004/A2:2020 is a key European standard developed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) under the CLC/SC 9XA technical committee. It focuses on railway applications, specifically the supply voltages of traction systems used in electric rail transport. This amendment (A2) updates the original 2004 edition to enhance compatibility and alignment with current EU directives, particularly the Directive 2016/797/EU concerning interoperability of rail systems.

The standard provides a harmonized framework for defining nominal supply voltages and frequency tolerances of traction power systems across Europe. It serves as a voluntary yet authoritative reference enabling rail operators, manufacturers, and infrastructure providers to ensure technical compatibility and uniformity in electrification systems.

Key Topics

  • Supply Voltages for Traction Systems: Specifies the nominal voltage values and acceptable voltage fluctuations for alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) railway power systems.
  • Voltage and Frequency Ranges: Details the permitted operational ranges for traction power supplies, critical for maintaining system stability and safety.
  • Compatibility Requirements: Addresses the technical compatibility of rolling stock and infrastructure, supporting interoperability within and across national rail networks.
  • Harmonization with EU Directives: Aligns with EU Directive 2016/797/EU for rail system interoperability, ensuring compliance with essential requirements related to traction power.
  • Amendment Provisions: Amendment A2 includes updates to annexes and references, reinforcing the linkage between this standard and corresponding Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) on energy and rolling stock subsystems.
  • Multilingual Official Versions: Available in English, French, and German, with translations permitted for official use in other languages by national electrotechnical committees.

Applications

  • Rail Electrification Projects: Provides the necessary technical parameters for designing and implementing new electrification infrastructure, including overhead lines and power substations.
  • Rolling Stock Design: Helps manufacturers design locomotives and train sets compatible with standardized traction supply voltages and frequency ranges.
  • Cross-Border Rail Operations: Facilitates interoperability by standardizing voltages, reducing technical barriers for trains operating across different European countries.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Assists railway operators and infrastructure managers in meeting EU regulatory requirements for energy supply in rail systems under Directive 2016/797/EU.
  • Safety and Reliability: Ensures stable and safe traction power delivery, minimizing risks related to voltage variations and frequency deviations in rail networks.

Related Standards

  • EN 50388 – Railway Applications: Power Supply and Rolling Stock – Technical Criteria for the Coordination Between Power Supply (Substations) and Rolling Stock for Efficient Energy Use and Electromagnetic Compatibility
  • EN 50126 – Railway Applications: The Specification and Demonstration of Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety (RAMS)
  • TSI Energy (Regulation EU No 1301/2014) – Technical Specifications for Interoperability of the Rail System in Europe – Energy Subsystem
  • TSI Locomotives and Passenger Rolling Stock (Regulation EU No 1302/2014) – Specifications for Rolling Stock to Ensure Compliance with Energy Supply Compatibility

Adhering to EN 50163:2004/A2:2020 is essential for ensuring robust, interoperable, and compliant railway traction power systems throughout the European Union and associated regions. This standard helps harmonize voltage supply conditions, enabling efficient rail transport and fostering integration within the European rail network.
