Overview
IEC TS 63134:2020/AMD1:2022 is an important amendment to the IEC Technical Specification focused on Active Assisted Living (AAL) use cases. Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this amendment enriches the existing framework by updating and expanding practical use cases relevant to AAL systems. The document aims to guide developers, researchers, and stakeholders in standardizing innovative solutions that assist elderly and disabled individuals in maintaining independence and quality of life.
The amendment provides a structured approach to defining, categorizing, and evaluating AAL use cases, emphasizing safety, health monitoring, social interaction, and technology integration within the home and community environments. This fosters international cooperation and harmonized development for AAL technologies within the electrotechnical sector.
Key Topics
Comprehensive Use Case Collection: Over 50 updated use cases that range in criticality (major, moderate, minor) covering diverse aspects such as personal health checks, medication monitoring, fall detection, smart home integration, and robotic assistance.
Use Case Template: Introduction of an updated version 2 template to ensure consistency and thoroughness in documenting new AAL use cases, including detailed narratives, actors, components, legal and ethical considerations, and data security/privacy aspects.
Criticality Levels: Each use case is classified by its level of criticality which affects health, safety, or daily living, enabling prioritization in system design and risk management.
AAL Assistance Levels: The document specifies varying assistance levels from independent living to advanced support with activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL).
Standardization and Interoperability: Detailed cross-referencing with international standards and legal regulations supports compliance and integration across geographic regions.
Ethical, Privacy, and Security Considerations: The template and use case analysis include sections dedicated to addressing data privacy, security, and ethical issues especially relevant to autonomous and assistive technologies.
Applications
IEC TS 63134:2020/AMD1:2022 supports practical applications in various sectors including:
Healthcare and Wellness: Remote health monitoring, medication adherence systems, fall and emergency detection, chronic disease management, and rehabilitation support.
Smart Home Systems: Intelligent lighting, environmental health monitoring, home safety alarms, and automated assistance like robotic caregivers and exoskeletons.
Mobility Assistance: Technologies facilitating mobility both indoors and outdoors such as smart wheelchairs, mobility assistants, and navigation support devices.
Social Interaction: Solutions to enhance communication and social engagement between users, care providers, and family to reduce isolation, including platforms integrated with smart TVs and communication devices.
Emergency Response: Systems enabling rapid emergency responses including one-stop emergency services and alarms triggered by health or environmental conditions.
Assistive Robotics: Deployment of autonomous systems and robots for care provision, daily assistance, and support in activities requiring physical interaction.
These applications showcase the potential of AAL systems to improve quality of life, promote independence, and reduce the burden on healthcare infrastructures.
Related Standards
IEC Standards on Electrotechnical Systems: IEC TS 63134 aligns closely with other IEC standards related to electrical and electronic technologies for healthcare and assistive devices.

AMENDMENT 1
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

6.2.1 General
Replace the first paragraph with the following text:
IEC SyC AAL has collected more than 50 use cases. Titles and short descriptions of the use
cases are listed in Table 1. The representative use cases are included in Annex B. An additional
list of the use cases, which is regularly updated, is available under the supporting documents
link: https://www.iec.ch/sycaal/supportingdocuments. Further use cases have been added and
also the use case template has been revised (see Annex E).
Renumber the existing NOTE as "NOTE 2" and add the following NOTE 1 after the first
paragraph:
NOTE 1 It is possible that relevant standards, regional laws and regulations, as well as liaisons are missing from
the original use case descriptions, and are being considered in the current SyC AAL document under consideration
on a use case standards inventory and mapping.
