Portable multimedia equipment - Determination of battery duration - Part 3: Wearable powered loudspeaker equipment
IEC 63296-3:2025 specifies the method for measuring the battery duration at a defined sound pressure level for continuous music playback of battery-operated wearable powered loudspeaker equipment. A primary battery or secondary battery can be used as a power source for such a shoulder-carried or body-worn loudspeaker and its composite device. In addition, only equipment that can be placed on or hung from a head and torso simulator (HATS) is covered. Bone conduction speakers are excluded. Portable loudspeaker equipment also supporting video playback as the main function is not covered by this document.

INTRODUCTION
Japanese industry association specification JEITA CP-2907 "Methods of Measurement for
Battery Duration on Wearable Speaker Equipment".

INTRODUCTION
This document specifies a method of measurement for battery duration of wearable powered
loudspeaker equipment. Wearable powered loudspeaker equipment is assumed to be a
personal device such as a shoulder-carried powered speaker which is worn near the ear or on
the body and its composite device.
This document was developed based on the following specification of the Japan Electronics
and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA): CP-2907 'Methods of Measurement
for Battery Duration on Wearable Speaker Equipment'.
The IEC 63296 series on 'Portable multimedia equipment – Determination of battery duration'
currently consists of the following:
– IEC 63296-1: Powered loudspeaker equipment
– IEC 63296-2: Headphones and earphones with active noise-cancelling functions
– IEC 63296-3: Wearable powered loudspeaker equipment.
1 Scope
This document specifies the method for measuring the battery duration at a defined sound
pressure level for continuous music playback of battery-operated wearable powered
loudspeaker equipment. A primary battery or secondary battery can be used as a power source
for such a shoulder-carried or body-worn loudspeaker and its composite device. In addition,
only equipment that can be placed on or hung from a head and torso simulator (HATS) is
covered. Bone conduction speakers are excluded. Portable loudspeaker equipment also
supporting video playback as the main function is not covered by this document.

5 Measurement method
5.1 General
Connect the EUT and measuring instruments as described in Figure 1. Measures or tests are
performed on EUT in factory shipping condition unless otherwise specified in 5.4. If there is an
input signal or video output that affects the battery duration, the setting is determined by the
manufacturer and clearly stated in the equipment instructions. This document recommends the
order for the measurement procedure as given in Figure 2.

Equipment' with the permission of JEITA.
5.2 Set up of EUT on HATS
Set up EUT on HATS. An EUT that can be carried on the shoulder, such as a neckband speaker,
is carried on the shoulder of the HATS. If the EUT is not placed on the shoulder, the
manufacturer's instruction manual may be followed.
5.3 Operating condition
5.3.1 Input condition
Set an input signal as specified in 4.4.
5.3.2 Output condition
Set to a condition that is continuous sound output.
NOTE A smart loudspeaker can specify the continuous music playback time excluding the standby time.
5.4 Adjustment of controls
The EUT is installed in the shipping condition as shown in Figure 1, and the volume control
shall be set to the sound pressure level specified in 4.5. If the specified output cannot be
obtained due to the coarseness of the resolution of the volume control circuit, the input signal
level may be adjusted within the resolution range of the volume controller. If the purpose is
clearly stated, measurement settings other than these conditions may be used.
5.5 Measurement of battery duration
After setting up the EUT to the measurement conditions, start the measurement using the
battery specified for the measurement. The time until the sound is interrupted, or abnormal
operation is performed, shall be measured. The state where the sound is interrupted is a state
where the sound output from the speaker is stopped and does not include a state where the
sound is distorted, or the sound pressure is low. If the sound pressure changes by more than
3 dB during measurement, the state shall be specified.
5.6 Characteristics to be specified
The manufacturer shall state the following values in the product datasheet, specification, or any
similar user communication:
a) the measured battery duration, in 15 min steps up to and including 4 h, for a battery duration
of 4 h and longer in 30 min steps, rounded down to the next value;
b) the type of signal input and SPL in dBA;
c) the battery type utilized as power source, fixed installation or user replaceable.
NOTE Annex A shows an example of characteristics to be specified.
