BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 161, Pipes of Plastics Materials for the Transport of Fluids
(Outside Diameters and Nominal Pressures). Part I: Metric Series, was drawn up by Technical
Committee ISO/TC 5, Pipes andfittings, the Secretariat of which is held by the Association Suisse
de Normalisation (SNV).
During 1954, the Technical Committee decided, by correspondence, to set up a Sub-Com-
mittee ISO/TC 5/SC 6 to study pipes and fittings of plastics materials for the transport of fluids.
The Netherlands Member Body was entrusted with the Secretariat of this Sub-Committee.
At the unofficial meeting of the Sub-Committee, held in The Hague, in April 1955, the proposal
was made to standardize the outside diameters and nominal pressures of the pipes, so as to
simplify the tooling for the manufacture of the pipes, to make the fitting easier, and to settle upon
a limited selection of pipes. As a result of this decision, a draft proposal was drawn up for a
metric series, based on preferred numbers and taking the various existing standards into account.
This draft proposal was adopted by the Sub-Committee at its first meeting, held in Zurich, in
March 1956.
This draft proposal was then submitted by correspondence, in June 1958, to the members
of the Technical Committee and was adopted by a majority of them as a Draft IS0 Recommen-
mendation.
On 25 March 1959, this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 282) was distributed to all the
IS0 Member Bodies and was approved, subject to a few modifications, by the following Member
Bodies :

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 161, Tubes en matières plastiques pour le transport des flicides
(diamètres extkrieurs et pressions nominales). Première partie: Série métrique, a 6té 6laborée par
le Comité Technique ISO/TC 5, Tuyauteries et raccords, dont le Secrétariat est assuré par l’Asso-
ciation Suisse de Normalisation (SNV).
C’est au cours de I’annCe 1954 que le Comité Technique décida, par correspondance, de
créer un Sous-Comitt ISO/TC 5/SC 6 pour l’étude des tubes et raccords en matières plastiques
pour le transport des fluides. Le Secrétariat de ce Sous-Comité fut confié au Comité Membre des
Pays-Bas.
Dès la réunion officieuse du Sous-Comité, tenue à La Haye, en avril 1955, il fut propos6 de
à simplifier
normaliser les diamhtres extérieurs des tubes et les pressions nominales, de façon
l’outillage pour la fabrication des tubes, à faciliter le raccordement et à fixer un choix limité des
tubes. A la suite de cette dtcision, un avant-projet fut établi pour une série métrique, bas6e sur
les nombres normaux et tenant compte de diverses normes existantes. Cet avant-projet fut adopt6
par le Sous-Comit6 lors de sa première rtunion, tenue à Zurich en mars 1956.
Cet avant-projet fut alors soumis en juin 1958, par correspondance, aux membres du Comit6
Technique qui l’adoptèrent, a la majorité, comme Projet de Recommandation ISO.
En date du 25 mars 1959, ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 (NO 282) fut distribué à tous
les Comités Membres de I’ISO et approuvé, sous reserve de quelques modifications, par les Comités
Membres suivants :
