Overview - ISO 6347:2017 (Textile floor coverings - Consumer information)

ISO 6347:2017 specifies the technical information that manufacturers and suppliers must provide to consumers at the point of sale for textile floor coverings. Applicable to all types of textile floor coverings, the standard defines the minimum essential product information to be supplied with each item and lists optional data that can be made available on request. The 2017 (third) edition updates include evolution in fibre-content analysis methods.

Key topics and requirements

The standard sets out what consumer-facing product data must be provided and how it should be identified:

  • Scope: Applies to textile floor coverings of all types; information must be provided from manufacturer/authorized representative to consumer.
  • Essential information (minimum required):
    • Means of identifying the responsible supplier: name, brand and/or trademark.
    • Commercial reference: unique style name or style number for positive identification.
    • Type and fibre content of the use-surface: natural fibres per ISO 6938; man-made fibres per ISO 2076; chemical analysis per ISO 1833 series when required.
    • Dimensions: length and width for rugs/mats and single-piece products per ISO 3018; tile side length and squareness per ISO 24342.
    • Total thickness: measured in accordance with ISO 1765.
    • Total mass per unit area: determined in accordance with ISO 8543.
    • Manufacturer’s tolerances: tolerances on measurements shall be included.
  • Optional information (Annex A): recommended items available on request, such as pile mass, pile thickness and density, tuft counts, static electrical propensity, electrical resistance, colour fastness, appearance retention, pile anchorage, resistance to delamination, flammability/ignitability results, recommended use areas, substrate details, installation and cleaning/maintenance instructions.

Practical applications and who uses ISO 6347

ISO 6347 is intended for anyone involved in the manufacture, sale, specification or assessment of textile floor coverings:

  • Manufacturers and authorized representatives - to prepare compliant product labels, data sheets and point-of-sale information.
  • Retailers and distributors - to ensure consumers receive essential product details at purchase.
  • Testing laboratories - to reference required test methods when supplying certified measurements (thickness, mass, fibre analysis).
  • Specifiers, architects and facility managers - to verify product suitability and request optional performance data.
  • Regulators and consumer-protection bodies - to check conformity with labeling and information requirements.

Keywords: ISO 6347, textile floor coverings, consumer information, point of sale, fibre content, product dimensions, thickness, mass per unit area.
