BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 1952, Brown coals and lignites - Method of extraction for the determination
of sodium and potassium soluble in dilute hydrochloric acid, was drawn up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 27,
Solid mineral fuels, the Secretariat of which is held by the British Standards Institution (BSI).
Work on this question led to the adoption of Draft IS0 Recommendation No. 1952, which was circulated
to all the IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry in January 1970. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of an
editorial nature, by the following Member Bodies :

BROWN COALS AND LIGNITES
METHOD OF EXTRACTION
FOR THE DETERMINATION OF SODIUM AND POTASSIUM
SOLUBLE IN DILUTE HYDROCHLORIC ACID
1. SCOPE
This IS0 Recommendation concerns the determination, in brown coals and lignites, of sodium and potassium
occurring as inorganic salts or as alkali humates which are soluble in dilute hydrochloric acid. These forms of
alkali may cause difficulties in combustion of certain brown coals and lignites (sait coals).
This IS0 Recommendation standardizes the extraction procedure only; the determination of sodium and
potassium in the extract may be carried out by any accurate method.
2. PRINCIPLE
Extraction of the sample of brown coal or lignite with boiling 0.005 N hydrochloric acid*. Centrifuging of
the extract and determination of the sodium and potassium in solution by any precise analytical method (for
example, gravimetric method or flame photometric method).
3. REAGENTS
All reagents should be of analytical reagent quality, and distilled or demineralized water should be used
throughout the determination.
Hydrochloric acid, 0.005 N solution.

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 1952, Charbons bruns et lignites - Méthode d’extraction en vue du dosage du
sodium et du potassium solubles dans l’acide chlorhydrique dilué, a été élaborée par le Comité Technique ISOlTC 27,
Combustibles minéraux solides, dont le Secrétariat est assuré par la British Standards Institution (BSI).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question aboutirent à l’adoption du Projet de Recommandation IS0 No 1952 qui
fut soumis, en janvier 1970, à l‘enquête de tous les Comités Membres de I’ISO. I1 fut approuvé, sous réserve de
quelques modifications d’ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités Membres suivants :

1. OBJET
La présente Recommandation IS0 concerne le dosage, dans les charbons bruns et les lignites, du sodium et du
potassium se présentant sous la forme de sels inorganiques ou d’humates alcalins solubles dans l’acide chior-
hydrique dilué. Ces formes d’alcalis peuvent rendre difficile la combustion de certains charbons bruns et lignites
(charbons contenant des sels).
La présente Recommandation IS0 normalise uniquement la procédure d’extraction; le dosage du sodium et du
potassium contenus dans l’extrait peut être effectué selon une méthode précise quelconque.
2. PRINCIPE
Extraction de l’échantillon de charbon brun ou de lignite avec de l’acide chlorhydrique 0,005 N bouillant*.
Centrifugation de l’extrait. Dosage du sodium et du potassium en solution à l’aide d’une méthode analytique
précise (par exemple : méthode gravimétrique, méthode photométrique à la flamme).
3. RÉACTIFS
Tous les réactifs doivent être de qualité analytique et l’eau utilisée au cours de la détermination doit être de
l’eau distillée ou déminéralisée.
3.1 Acide chlorhydrique, solution 0,005 N.
3.2 Ethanol à 95 % (V/V).
4. APPAREILLAGE
Tous les appareils gradués doivent être de la meilleure qualité analytique possible
4.1 Fiole jaugée à un trait, d’une contenance de 250 ml.
4.2 Centrifugeur de laboratoire tournant à environ 2000 tr/min.
