BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 531 -1966, Cast iron sanitary pipes and fittings for waste water and ventilation, was drawn up
by Technical Committee ISO/TC 5, Pipes andfittings, the Secretariat of which is held by the Association Suisse de Normalisation
(SNV).
Work on this question led to the adoption of Draft IS0 Recommendation No. 743, which was circulated to all the
IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry in November 1964. It was approved by 22 Member Bodies; five Member Bodies opposed the
approval of the Draft (Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland and the U.S.A.).
This Draft IS0 Recommendation was then submitted by correspondence to the IS0 Council, which decided, in December 1966,
to accept it as an IS0 RECOMMENDATION.
BRIEF HISTORY RELATING TO ADDENDUM 1
The work which led to the publication of IS0 Recommendation R 53 1-1966 was continued and an addendum
to that IS0 Recommendation was drawn up in the form of a Draft IS0 Recommendation. This Draft (No. 1670),
after having been adopted by the Technical Committee, was circulated to all the IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry in
September 1968. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of an editorial nature, by the following Member
Bodies :

1. SCOPE
This addendum to IS0 Recommendation R 53 1 -1966, Cast iron sanitary pipes and fittings for waste water and
ventilation, applies to cast iron fittings used in the building industry for the laying of waste water and ventilation
pipes, and has the object of
- reducing the dimensions of the castings (lengths b and L) and thus facilitating casting;
- limiting the number of types in order to simplify the manufacture, supply and storage in factories, stores,
and on site.
2. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF FITTINGS
The considerations explained in section 1, together with the study of the provisions adopted by the various
countries, have led to the adoption of the following rules which rationally connect the various fitting types.
2.1 Bends and single branches
The slope of oblique pipeline portions has been fixed at 45", 67" 30' and 87" 30'. The same values have
been ascribed to the angle of the bends and to the inclination of the branch pipes.
2.2 Double branches
Double branches, which are used far less than single branches, are provided for exclusively with the most
common branch inclination : 67" 30'.
S fitting
2.3
The spacing between the S branches has been fmed at 75 or 150 mm, the larger spacing being obtained
through the combination of two bend pipes connected, if necessary, by a short pipe.
2.4 Thickness of fittings
The wail thicknesses provided for fittings are equal to those provided for pipes of the same nominal diameters.
As an exception to the above, fittings with orifices of different diameters have a uniform thickness, equal to
the thickness corresponding to the nominal diameter of the largest orifice.
2.5 Change of diameters
A series of branch pipe fittings has been provided for in order to ensure the junction of the main and branch
pipes.

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 531-1966, Tuyaux et raccords salubres en fonte pour canalisations d'eaux usées et de venti-
lation, a été élaborée par le Comité Technique,ISO/TC 5, Tuyautedes et raccords, dont le Secrétatiat est assuré par l'Association
Suisse de Normalisation (SNV).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question aboutirent à l'adoption du Projet de Recommandation IS0 No 743 qui fut soumis,
en novembre 1964, à l'enquête de tous les Comités Membres de L'ISO. I1 fut approuvé par 22 Comités Membres; cinq Comités
Membres se déclarèrent opposés à l'approbation du Projet (Allemagne, Norvège, Pays-Bas, Suisse et U.S.A.).
Ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 fut alors soumis par correspondance au Conseil de VISO, qui décida, en décembre 1966,
de l'accepter comme RECOMMANDATION ISO.
HISTORIQUE RELATIF À L'ADDITIF 1
Les travaux qui aboutirent à la Recommandation ISO/R 53 1-1966 furent poursuivis et un additif à cette
Recommandation IS0 fut établi sous forme de Projet de Recommandation ISO. Ce Projet (NO 1670), après avoir
été adopté par le Comité Technique, fut soumis, en septembre 1968, à l'enquête de tous les Comités Membres
de l'IS0. I1 fut approuvé, sous réserve de quelques modifications d'ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités Membres
suivants :

1. OBJET
Le présent additif à la Recommandation ISO/R 53 1-1966, Tuyaux et raccords salubres en fonte pour canalisations
d'eaux usées et de ventilation, définit les raccords salubres en fonte pour canalisations d'eaux usées et de ventilation
en vue de
- réduire les dimensions des pièces (longueurs b et L) et d'en faciliter, ainsi, le moulage;
- limiter le nombre de types et de grandeurs, dans le but de simplifier la fabrication, l'approvisionnement et
le stockage dans les usines, dans les dépôts et chez les utilisateurs.
2. CARACTÉFUSTIQUES G~NÉRALES DES RACCORDS
Les considérations exposées au chapitre 1, ainsi que l'étude des dispositions adoptées dans les différents pays, ont
conduit à l'adoption des règles suivantes qui lient, d'une façon rationnelle, les différents types de raccords.
2.1 Coudes et embranchements simples
La pente des parties de canalisations obliques a été 'fiiée à 45", 67" 30' et 87" 30'. L'angle des coudes et
l'inclinaison de la tubulure des embranchements simples ont été fiés aux mêmes valeurs.
2.2 Embranchements doubles
Les embranchements doubles, beaucoup moins utilisés que les embranchements simples, sont prévus exclusi-
vement avec l'inclinaison de tubulure la plus courante, à savoir : 67" 30'.
Raccords en S
2.3
L'écartement des branches des raccords en S a été fié à 75 ou 150 mm, l'écartement supérieur étant obtenu
par la combinaison de deux coudes éventuellement reliés par un tuyau court.
2.4 Epaisseur des raccords
Les raccords ont été prévus avec une épaisseur de paroi égale à celle des tuyaux de même diamètre nominal.
Par exception à ce qui précède, les raccords comportant des tubulures de diamètre différent ont une épaisseur
uniforme égale à celle correspondant au diamètre nominal de la tubulure maximale.
