The IS0 Kecominendation K 1028, Flowchart symbols for information processing, was drawn up by
Technical Committee iSO/TC 97, Computers and information processing. the Secretariat of which is held by the
United States of America Standards institute (USASI).
Work on this question led, in 1965, to the adoption of a Draft IS0 Kecommendation.
in November 1967, this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 1399) was circulated to all the IS0 Member Bodies
for enquiry. it was approved, subject to a few modifications of an editorial nature, by the following Member
Bodies :

FLOWCHART SYMBOLS FOR INFORMATION PROCESSING
1. SCOPE
This IS0 Recommendation establishes graphical symbols for use in flowcharts for information processing
systems, including automatic data processing systems.
2. FIELD OF APPLICATION
The graphical symbols included in this IS0 Recommendation are intended to represent on flowcharts both
the sequence of operations and
the flow of data and paperwork
of infonnation processing systems. This IS0 Recommendation does not cover : identifying, descriptive or
explanatory information written inside or adjacent to a symbol; or pictorial type flowcharts that utilize pictures
or drawings to depict a system.
3. CONVENTIONS
3.1 The general direction of flow shall be
Left to Right
Top to Bottom
Arrows indicating the flow shail be used when the flow is not as specified.
Arrows indicating the flow should be used whenever increased clarity will result
3.2 Flow lines may cross; this means they have no logical interrelation
3.3
Two or more incoming flow lines may join with one outgoing flow line.
3.4 While this IS0 Recommendation does not make exact specifications about height to width ratios, it
does require the user not to vary these to such an extent that the symbol is not immediately
recognizable.

4. FLOWCHART SYMBOLS

This symbol represents any kind of processing functions,
e.g. the process of executing a defined operation or group
of operations resulting in a change in value, form, or
location of information, or in the determination of which
of several flow directions is to be followed.
2 decision
This symbol represents a decision or switching type
operation that determines which of a number of
alternative paths is to be followed
3 preparation
This symbol represents modification of an instruction
or group of instructions which change the programme
itself, e.g. set a switch, modify an index register, and

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 1028, Symboles d’organigramme pour le rrairement de l’information, a été
élaborée par le Comité Technique iSO/TC 97, Calculateurs et traitement de IÏnfbrmation, dont le Secrétariat
est assuré par le United States of America Standards Institute (USASI).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question aboutirent, en 1965, à l’adoption d’un Projet de Recommandation ISO.
En novembre 1967, ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 (No 1299) fut soumis à l’enquête de tous les Comités
Membres de I’ISO. I1 fut approuvé, sous réserve de quelques modifications d’ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités
Membres suivants :

1. OBJET
La présente Recommandation IS0 donne les symboles graphiques à utiliser dans les organigrammes pour les
systèmes de traitement de l’information, y compris les systèmes de traitement automatique des données.
2. DOMAINE D’APPLICATION
I1 est entendu que les symboles graphiques donnés dans la présente Recommandation IS0 représentent, dans
les organigrammes, aussi bien

la suite des opérations, que
~
la circulation des données et des documents
dans les systèmes de traitement de l’information. Cette Recommandation IS0 ne couvre pas les informations
qu’on écrit à l’intérieur ou à côté d’un symbole pour en assurer l’identification, la description ou l’explication,
ni les organigrammes de type schématique qui utilisent des images ou schémas pour décrire un système.
3. CONVENTIONS
3.1 La direction générale des lignes doit être
de gauche à droite
de haut en bas.
Des flèches seront utilisées lorsque cette orientation ne sera pas respectée.
Des flèches indiquant l’orientation seront utilisées chaque fois qu’une meilleure compréhension
pourra en résulter.
3.2 Les lignes de liaison peuvent se croiser; ceci signifie qu’il n’y a pas de relation logique entre elles.
3.3 Plusieurs lignes de liaison affluentes peuvent se joindre à une ligne efférente.
3.4 Bien que la présente Recommandation IS0 ne donne pas de spécifications exactes quant au rapport
hauteur/largeur, l’utilisateur est prié de ne pas faire varier ces rapports de façon telle que le symbole
ne soit pas immédiatement reconnaissable.

qui détermine le chemin à suivre parmi plusieurs possibles.

d’un groupe d’instructions changeant le programme lui-même,
par exemple : positionnement d’un aiguillage, modification
