BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 1973, Textile fibres - Determination of linear densitjl - Gruvinzetric method,
was drawn up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 38, Textiles, the Secretariat of which is held by the British Standards
Institution (BSI).
Work on this question led to the adoption of Draft IS0 Recommendation No. 1973, which was circulated to
L all the IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry in May 1970.
The Draft was approved, subject to a few modifications of an editorial nature, by the following Member
Bodies :

DETERMINATION OF LINEAR DENSITY
GRAVIMETR IC METHOD
1. SCOPE
This IS0 Recommendation specifies the procedure to be followed for the gravimetric determination of the linear
density of textile fibres cut from a length in the straightened state. Two methods are described, applicable
respectively
(a) to bundles of fibres;
(b) to individual fibres.
The method for bundles of fibres can be applied only to those fibres which can be kept rectilinear and parallel
during preparation of the bundles. It is not applicable to wool or textured fibres.
2. PRINCIPLE
The mass and length of
(a) bundles of fibres or
(b) of individual fibres,
in standard condition, are measured and thence a mean value of the linear density is deduced and expressed in
appropriate units. For most purposes the appropriate units in the Tex System are the miilitex and the decitex.

3. APPARATUS
3.1 Balance, suitable for weighing the bundles of fibres or individual fibres to an accuracy of I %.
3.2 Device for cutting thefibres, or bundles of fibres, to a length known with an accuracy of 1 %* and allowing
of adjustment of the tension of the bundles to be cut.
3.3 Textile support,fabric, of a colour contrasting with that of the fibres to be tested.
3.4 Glass plate, approximately 10 cm X 20 cm in size, with one polished edge.
3.5 Forceps.
4. CONDITIONING AND TESTING ATMOSPHERE
The atmosphere for conditioning and testing should be one of the standard atmospheres for testing specified in
IS0 Recommendation R 139**, Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing textiles.

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 1973, Fibres textiles - Détermination de la masse linéique -Méthode gravimétrique,
a été élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 38, Textiles, dont le Secrétariat est assuré par la British Standards
Institution (BSI).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question aboutirent à l’adoption du Projet de Recommandation IS0 No 1973
qui fut soumis, en mai 1970, à l’enquête de tous les Comités Membre de IWO.

1. OBJET
La présente Recommandation IS0 spécifie le mode opératoire à suivre pour la détermination gravimétrique de la
masse linéique des fibres textiles coupées à une longueur déterminée en les maintenant rectilignes. Les deux méthode
décrites ici sont applicables
a) aux faisceaux de fibres;
b) aux fibres individuelles.
La méthode à un faisceau ne peut être appliquée qu’à des fibres qui peuvent être maintenues rectilignes et
parallèles pendant la préparation du faisceau. Elle ne s’applique ni aux fibres de laine, ni aux fibres texturées.
2. PRINCIPE
Mesurage, dans des conditions normales, de la masse et de la longueur
de faisceaux de fibres, ou
a)
b) de fibres individuelles.
Calcul de la valeur moyenne de la masse linéique, en l’exprimant par une unité appropriée. Dans la plupart des
cas, l’unité appropriée du système Tex est le décitex et le millitex. (Voir Recommandation ISO/R 1144, Textiles -
Système universel de désignation de la masse linéique (Système Tex).)
3. APPAREILLAGE
3.1 Balance, permettant de peser les faisceaux de fibres ou les fibres individuelles avec une précision au moins
égale à 1 % de la pesée.

moins égale à 1 %*, et permettant de régler la tension du faisceau à sectionner.
3.3 Support textile revêtu, d’une couleur contrastante avec celle des fibres à examiner.
3.4 Lame de verre, ayant par exemple les dimensions 10 cm X 20 cm, avec un bord poli.
3.5 Pinces ou brucelles.
4. ATMOSPHÈRE DE CONDITIONNEMENT ET D’ESSAI
L‘atmosphère de conditionnement et d’essai doit être l’une des atmosphères normales d’essai, spécifiées dans la
Recommandation ISO/R 139**, Atmosphères normales pour le conditionnement et 1 ’essai des textiles.

Effectuer l’échantillonnage conformément aux prescriptions de la Recommandation ISO/R 1 130, Méthodes
d’échantillonnage des fibres pour essais.
6. MODE OPÉRATOIRE
6.1 Généralités
Après pré-conditionnement, amener l’échantillon jusqu’à masse constante dans l’atmosphère normale d’essai.
