BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 59, Determination of the Percentage of Acetone
Soluble Matter in Phenolic Mouldings, was prepared by Technical Committee
ISO/TC 61, Plastics, the Secretariat of which is held by the American Standards
Association, Incorporated (ASA).
At its second meeting, held in Turin, in October 1952, the Technical Com-
mittee assigned the development of this question to its Working Group No. 5,
Physical Chemical Properties, under the leadership of the United Kingdom.
The draIt formulated by the Working Group, was presented to the Technical
Committee at its third plenary meeting, held at Stockholm, in August 1953;
and then distributed to the members of the Technical Committee as a draft
proposal for an IS0 Recommendation.
After its reconsideration at the fourth meeting of ISO/TC 61, held in
Brighton, in October 1954, the draft proposal was adopted, subject to some
amendments, as a Draft IS0 Recommendation.
On 31 December 1955, the Draft IS0 Recommendation was circulated to
all IS0 Member Bodies and, some amendments having been taken into con-
sideration, it was approved by the following 29 Member Bodies (out of a total
of 37):

1. SCOPE
This method of test describes the procedure for determining the percentage

of matter which can be extracted by acetone, at a temperature near its
boiling point, from a finely ground sample of a phenolic moulding.

The process of extraction is carried out under specified conditions for a
specified time. While a high proportion of soluble matter is determined,
extraction is not necessarily complete. The results are not more than
comparative, because the extracted material normally contains substances
other than any undercured resin which may be present, e.g. lubricants,
colouring matter and plasticizers.

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/ R 59, Dttermination du pourcentage de matibres
solubles dans l’acttone contenues dans les pibces moultes à base de phtnoplastes,
a été élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 61, Matibres plastiques, dont le
Secrétariat est assuré par l’American Standards Association, Incorporated
(ASA).
Au cours de la deuxième réunion, tenue
Turin, en octobre 1952, le Comité
Technique confia l’étude de cette question 8 son Groupe de travail No 5, Pro-
prittés physico-chimiques, sous la présidence du Royaume-Uni.
La proposition élaborée par ce Groupe de travail fut présentée au Comité
Technique lors de sa troisième réunion plénière, tenue 8 Stockholm, en aotît
1953; elle fut ensuite soumise par correspondance aux membres du Comité
Technique, 8 titre d’avant-projet de Recommandation ISO.
Au cours de la quatrième réunion d’ISO/TC 61, tenue 8 Brighton, en
octobre 1954, cet avant-projet fit l’objet d’un nouvel examen et fut adopté,
ISO.

1. OBJET
Cette methode d’essai définit les conditions dans lesquelles est détermine

le pourcentage de matières qui peuvent &re extraites par l’acétone, A une
température voisine de son point d’ébullition, d’un &chantillon finement
pulvérisé de pièce moulée B base de phénoplastes.
L’essai pour établir la teneur en matières solubles dans l’acétone est l’un

des moyens employés pour déterminer le degré relatif de cuisson des
pièces, moulées avec un phénoplaste donné. L’extraction est conduite
dans des conditions déterminées, durant un laps de temps défini. Meme
si une proportion élevée de matières solubles est constatee, l’extraction
n’est pas nécessairement terminde. Les résultats ne sont que comparatifs,
car les produits extraits contiennent normalement d’autres substances
que des résines non-polymérisees qui peuvent s’y trouver, telles que
lubrifiants, matières colorantes ou plastifiants.
