BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 216, Trimmed Sizes of Writing Paper and Certain Classes
of Printed Matter, was drawn up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 6, Paper, the Secretariat
of which is held by the Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).
Work on this question by the Technical Committee began in 1958 and led in 1959
to the adoption of a Draft IS0 Recommendation.
In November 1959, this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 330) was circulated to all
the IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of
an editorial nature, by the following Member Bodies:

FOREWORD
In many countries, far more sizes of paper are used than are really necessary. Many
of them came into existence under conditions different from those prevailing today, while
the origin of others was due to chance. Consequently they do not fulfil the present need for
consistency between the sizes of paper and printed matter for various purposes, nor do
they meet the many requirements for a coherent relationship between the sizes of paper,
printed or not, papermaking, printing and converting machinery and equipment, and
storage and filing equipment.
The purpose of this IS0 Recommendation is to improve the present position by
providing a rationally designed IS0 System of trimmed sizes which can bring about a
reduction in the number of sizes and create more rational, clear and consistent ranges.
This will simplify and cheapen ordering, production, use, dispatch and storage and will
also provide a sound basis for standardization in related fields.
One of the considerations leading to the present IS0 Recommendation was the fact
that the standards bodies in the following countries had already adopted this system of
sizes in their national standards, and others were known to be using the sizes:

AND CERTAIN CLASSES OF PRINTED MATTER
1. SCOPE
This IS0 Recommendation applies to trimmed sizes of paper for administrative, commercial
and technical use, and also to certain classes of printed matter, such as forms, catalogues, etc.
It does not necessarily apply to
newspapers,
published books,
posters,
other special items which may be the subject of separate IS0 Recommendations.
2. UNDERLYiNG PRINCIPLES
2.1 Basic principles (regularly derived sizes)
The system of paper sizes is built on the following basis: each normal series (regularly
derived sizes) consists of a range of sizes formed in such a manner that each size is achieved
by dividing the size immediately above it into two equal parts, the division being parallel
to the shorter side (the halving principle). Consequently the areas of two successive sizes

All the sizes in each series are geometrically similar to one another (the principle of similar-
ity) (see Fig. 2). This requirement, combined with that explained in the preceding paragraph,
gives the following equation for the sides x and y of a given size:

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation lSO/R 216, Formats finis des papiers d’écriture et de certaines
catégories d’imprimés, a été élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 6, Papier, dont le
Secrétariat est assuré par l’Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question furent entrepris par le Comité Technique en
1958 et aboutirent en 1959 à l’adoption d’un Projet de Recommandation 1SO.
En novembre 1959, ce Projet de Recommandation 1SO (No 330) fut soumis à l’enquête
de tous les Comités Membres de 1’ISO. I1 fut approuvé, sous réserve de quelques modifi-
cations d’ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités Membres suivants :

Dans de nombreux pays, on utilise beaucoup plus de formats de papier qu’il n’est
réellement nécessaire. Un grand nombre de ceux-ci ont vu le jour dans des conditions diffé-
rentes de celles qui règnent aujourd’hui, tandis que l’origine de certains autres peut être
imputée au hasard. En conséquence, ces formats ne répondent pas à la nécessité actuelle
d’une harmonie entre les formats de papiers et d’imprimés pour usages divers et ne satisfont
pas davantage aux multiples conditions requises pour établir une coordination logique
entre les formats de papiers, imprimés ou non, les machines et les matériels de production,
d’impression et de transformation et les matériels de stockage et de classement.
La présente Recommandation IS0 vise à améliorer la situation actuelle en préconisant
un Système IS0 de formats finis rationnellement établi, qui soit de nature à opérer une
réduction du nombre des formats et à créer des échelonnements ordonnés, clairs et logiques.
Ceci, tout en les rendant plus économiques, simplifiera commandes, production, utilisation,
expédition et stockage et donnera également des fondements solides à la normalisation

Une des raisons ayant conduit à la présente Recommandation IS0 est le fait que les
organismes de normalisation des pays suivants ont déjà adopté ce système de formats
dans leurs normes nationales et que d’autres pays utilisent également ces formats.

1. DOMAINE D’APPLICATION
La présente Recommandation IS0 s’applique aux formats finis de papier pour usages adminis-
tratifs, commerciaux et techniques et à certaines catégories d’imprimés, tels que formulaires,
catalogues, etc.
Elle ne s’applique pas nécessairement
au papier journal de presse,
à l’édition,
aux affiches publicitaires,
aux usages particuliers qui pourront faire l’objet d’autres Recommandations ISO.
2. PRINCIPES DIRECTEURS
2.1 Principes de base (formats dérivés réguliers)
Ce système de formats est construit sur la base suivante: la série normale (formats dérivés
réguliers) est constituée par une suite de formats, tels que chacun d’eux est obtenu par
division en deux parties égales du format immédiatement supérieur, parallèlement au
petit côté (principe de la division en deux parties égales). Les surfaces de deux formats
successifs sont donc entre elles dans le rapport 2 : 1 (voir Fig. I).
Tous ces formats sont géométriquement semblables, quelle que soit la série à laquelle ils
appartiennent (principe de similitude) (voir Fig. 2). Cette condition, conjuguée avec celle
qui est prévue dans l’alinéa précédent, donne l’équation suivante, applicable aux deux
côtés x et y d’un format:
