BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 70, Photographic Sound Record on 35 mm
Prints, was drawn up by Technic:il Committee IS0 /TC 36, Cinematography,
the Secretariat of which is held by the American Standards Association, Inc.
(ASA).
In April 1948, the Technical Committee Secretariat proposed the study
of the question, and that the American standard 222.40-1946 be taken as a
basis for discussion.
ISO/TC 36 considered the proposal at its first meeting, which was held
in New York in June 1952. It entrusted the Secretariat with the drawing up
of a draft proposal based on the American standard, taking into account certain
improvements decided upon at the meeting.
The draft proposal was submitted in September 1954 to the members of
the Technical Committee and adopted as a Draft IS0 Recommendation, no
objection having been raised.
In May 1955, the Draft IS0 Recommendation was submitted to all the
IS0 Member Bodies, but Technical Committee IS0 /TC 36 decided at its second
meeting, held in Stockholm in June 1955, to introduce some improvements.
In March 1957, the Draft thus amended was submitted to all the IS0
Member Bodies as a second Draft IS0 Recommendation and was approved
by the following 20 (out of a total of 38) Member Bodies:

La Recommandation IS0 /R 70, Trace acoustique photographique sur les
copies d’exploitation de 35 mm, a été élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 36,
Cinématographie, dont le Secrétariat est assuré par 1’American Standards Asso-
ciation, Inc. (ASA).
En avril 1948, le Secrétariat du Comité Technique proposa de mettre la
question à l’étude et de prendre comme base de discussion la norme américaine
222.40-1 946.
ISO/TC 36 examina la proposition du Secrétariat au cours de sa première
réunion, tenue à New-York, en juin 1952. I1 chargea le Secrétariat d’établir un
avant-projet basé sur la norme américaine, sous réserve des amendements déci-
dés en cours de réunion.
L’avant-projet fut soumis en septembre 1954 aux membres du Comité
Technique et adopté comme Projet de Recommandation ISO, aucune objection
n’ayant été formulée.
Ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 fut soumis en mai 1955 à tous les Comi-
tés Membres de 1’ISO. Mais, au cours de sa deuxième réunion, tenue à Stockholm,
en juin 1955, le Comité Technique ISO/TC 36 décida de lui apporter quelques
modifications.
. Le Projet ainsi modifié fut soumis en mars 1957 à tous les Comités Mem-
bres de 1’ISO en tant que deuxikme Projet de Recommandation IS0 et fut
approuvé par les Comités Membres suivants (au nombre
